While in Europe this summer I noticed something that seemed like a great idea, and wondered why it couldn't happen in the US. At all of the public transportation stations, the escalators ran on sensors--so unless a person approached the escalator to use it, it was not running (presumably to save energy and money). Can the city of SF look into that to save money and energy too? Seems like it would be worth the trouble.

We live in an society that is constantly bombarded with advertising images. In SF it's virtually impossible to get from one place to another without being pitched the latest iPod, Windows version or the next blockbuster movie. Why? Because advertising works. People see things, remember them, and act accordingly by making a purchase, telling a friend or altering their own behavior.
In order for advertisers to reach their audience they need a medium in which they can communicate their message; the most popular being television, radio, print, web, and open-air (posters, billboards etc.). The organizations that provide access to their Read This Posty »

When a police officer hears an especially loud motorcycle pass by, ticket it. Simple, affordable, and legal. No new laws, no new staff, just do the job.
MUNI filth. When cutting the budget to MUNI perhaps cut something other than the cleaning staff. BART is right up there with Muni in cutting the cleaning staff while so how managing staff raises for the top administrators. I want to see them on the bus.
How about signs on the bus that suggest that the bus is not for carrying on conversations on cell phones.
People want a WiFi city but people don't Read This Posty »

Why not highlight SF's high tech potential and natural beauty by creating kiosks in the BART / MUNI stations where passengers can do a trip planner, tourists can get suggestions of where to go / what to see - and how to use Public Transportation to get there - lots of possibilities! I don't think any other city in the US has anything like that - and it would be terrific, brighten up the whole underground area, besides being incredibly useful.

Add more trash cans in muni/bart stations and on corners. This city is dirtier than NYC!

Here's an idea.. make sure the police actually do their job. I just came from watching an all-out brawl at Hallidie Plaza/Powell Street BART/MUNI station. I viewed this out of my apartment window which overlooks the plaza.
I didn't call the police because I saw 2-3 BART police (or some other type of uniformed officer) come out of the BART station and watch the fighting. I assumed they were just calling the police or for backup and waiting for them to arrive. But they just stood there and did nothing.
Half an hour later, the police have finally arrived and Read This Posty »

Why is SF lagging behind London and NYC? Aren't we supposed to be the most progressive city - particularly when it comes to environmental measures. SF needs to get on board with these other cities and charge drivers a congestion tax for driving downtown. This would make the city cleaner, easier to get around, and a hell of a lot more environmentally friendly. The revenue, of course, would need to go toward expanding and improving the quality of the city's public transit options. I guarantee there'd be far fewer cars downtown if, for example, BART extended further down the Peninsula Read This Posty »

1) I complain about the rude drivers in the city who run stop signs and don't care if you're in the cross walk or not. I don't know how to fix this except to perhaps have enforcement campaigns work certain areas of the city. I jog through the city streets and every single time I encounter a careless driver who makes me fear for my safety. Also, the heavy traffic is really frustrating, but I don't know what to suggest about that.
2) Parking is obviously a problem in this city, which leads to double parking which is another problem. Read This Posty »

To connect Marin county with the end of cal train in SF - create a new mass transit system -- which utilizes pre-existing roadways and is built on an elevated BART-like track right down the center median (and sometimes on the sides when necessary) and utilizing the pre-existing passageway that leads under the golden gate bridges' roadbed leading into Marin county (the GG bridge designer had a futuristic vision and saw mass transit in the bridges' future, so the potential excess weight tolerances are likely built-in)...

How about fare machines at bus stops? I would advocate a system like BART with prepaid cards that have to be run through a machine to release the turnstyles, even on busses. These could be available at bus stops through credit or cash.
Though this would create an onus on seniors and children to purchase their tickets as monthly or weekly passes so they can get a discount, it would greatly simplify the fare structure, and allow for far greater revenue from fare collection.
I want to see muni succeed, and clearly fares are a problem. How about we make it easy Read This Posty »

I Live in North Beach and one of the reasons that there is no parking and there are huge numbers of drunk and rowdy drivers every weekend is that BART doesn't serve this major urban area by running trains late on the weekends. How they can annoint themselves one of the most efficient transit systems in the country when there is absolutely no service when it's desperately needed is beyond me. I have travelled on late trains and they are in my experience very full.
