There is already a solution - bike lanes; which are largely unused. The sidewalk is already full of runners, walkers, tourists, moms with carriages etc. Bikes are dangerous and should not be allowed. I ride often and I use the bike lanes. Bikes should follow the same rules as cars. The benefit to cyclists is they don't have to dodge pedestrians. The bike coalition is fighting for cyclists rights and I agree, but cyclists should do their part and be courteous, conscientious riders. Please ban bikes along the Embarcadero. The bike lanes are already in place.
Thanks,

I have noticed that often times when people run red lights they tend to run them because they are trying to get through before the light turns from yellow to red. I have also noticed that as one light turns red the intersecting light would turn green. If a delay were put in place so that both lights were red for perhaps 3 seconds before the one turns green this delay could perhaps save lives and prevent injuries. This would assure that when the light turns green - those who go through it will less likely be met by someone Read This Post »

I do not ride my bicycle unless my energy levels are fairly strong. Sometimes it affects my productivity. One big reason is the jarring effect of the bike lane conditions on my body. With the potholes (thanks for marking most of them at least) but worse the construction patches that are not completed well enough for bicycle safety, it's a seriously rough ride.
It occurred to me the other day that the low grade speed bumps that some of these patch jobs amount to are actually probably helpful in the car lanes -- they slow down traffic by interrupting the driver's Read This Post »

I have an issue for you, I know you probably gets tons a day, but I may as well try.
I ride BMX. This is similar to skateboarding, but on a bike. I have been doing this for 6 years, and have met many friends throughout California thanks to it. I end up getting in a lot of trouble with the law because of my sport. There is literally nowhere in the Bay Area to legally practice our sport. We used to have the Vans Skatepark in the Great Mall of Milpitas, but it closed because it was being solely supported Read This Post »

Problem: Not enough city revenues.
Solution: Implement a city and commuter tax, akin to NYC. that way, renters and commuters will pay into the city, and the city will have a steady stream of income without having to continually raise fees that adversely affects quality of life (ie. parking fines, filing fees for superior ct, muni fares, etc.).
Problem: Not enough money to implement bike lanes, etc.
Solution: Every bike owner pays registration fee annually. Money garnered will go towards making safer bike lanes. Also, enforce traffic violations of bikes as well with red light cameras. Bikes could be tracked if they Read This Post »

1) We need separate lane just for bicycle (next to pedestrian pavement) like Europe, instead of letting the bicyclist ride through the traffic & pedestrians dangerously.
2) We need more traffic light timers on 19th Avenue to avoid unnecessary accidents for crossroad pedestrians, esp. for the seniors and people with leg & knee problem. Instead, we have traffic light timers on 7th Avenue and not on 9th Avenue in Sunset. Wider road or Blvd need timer as it takes longer time to cross.
Thank you!

make sf a safer place for those who wish to bike. designated biking lanes that are wide and protected from motorized vehicles.
plant more fruit baring trees in sf - a bit like eden.
make recycling education mandatory for those seeking residency.
establish a spiritual center in sf - perhaps a large labyrinth - something ecumenical.

Too many bicyclists run stop signs and stop lights. In addition, they do not yield for pedestrians and also ride their bikes on sidewalks.
SF needs bike registration, licensing and policing of some type.
Safe and responsible biking is important, but the lobby of the Bike Coalition and environmental activism for some reason has given bike riders an attitude of non-conformity and irresponsibility.
Smart solution:
-- any new bike should sold in SF has to be registered with the city.
-- any bike rider must pass a basic "rules of the road" course and get licensed
-- the city incent safe riding through "free" Read This Post »

Parking fine fees have been increased to help off-set MUNI budget shortages. Why not increase moving violation fees to help increase traffic and, more importantly, pedestrian safety. As Susan Leal once said, "it is anarchy on our streets." And the situation has only gotten worse since her stance led to an increase in the number of traffic cameras. Although never happy about advocating for anything Big-Brother like, if drivers (and motorcyclists and bikers) will not comport themselves in a safe and lega manner, then the City has an obligation to intervene. Higher fines, more traffic cameras, increase police presence, and Read This Post »

Please, please soon pave the JFK lower drive(below transverse drive) in Golden Gate park. It is a major, major hazard for bicycles and terrible for cars and tourists!

Dear Mayor,
There is absolute anarchy on our streets. Automobile drivers ignore traffic lights, block crosswalks and sidewalks, and are killing pedestrians with no consequences. Bicyclists mow down senior citizens on our sidewalks. I've not seen a single bicyclist ever ticketed for riding on the sidewalk and I have seen police officers riding on the sidewalk setting an example of lawlessness. Pedestrians don't even slow down when the little red guy starts flashing at them, blocking automobile drivers trying to complete their turns.
This anarchy leads to a total diprespect for law and order. It leads to unnecessary death and injury. Youths Read This Post »

The time was up for these thugs long ago. They should get permits like every other group in the city and should obey all traffic laws. If not they should be arrested. The time has long passed to allow a group of thugs to take over the city once a month.

I watched police last night yelling at car drivers just trying to go when their light was green. The message we're sending is that just because there are a lot of people breaking the law, it's ok. This is OUTRAGEOUS. THEY ARE PURPOSELY BREAKING THE LAW AND PURPOSELY ANNOYING LAW ABIDING CITIZENS. Put a stop to this or control it. Arrest them all. All those cops descending on motorists trying to cross the street on the green light could've instead stopped all the bicyclists running the red light. STOP ALLOWING ANARCHY.

Make them organize and assume responsibilities for approved courses, permit and police costs, a marked course- this is ony fair in a city ruled by law. parades need permits and have to cover costs, Races and walks , often to benefit non profit charities, pay thousands of $$ to cover city costs, money that woulkd otherwise go to non profits. And because of all of this, the city residents and those working here are made aware of traffic issues and threats to their normal traffic. Critical Mass is given a pass, the city pays, the citizens except the few hundred Read This Post »

The newspaper mentioned the next Critical Mass event. I had an idea. Would it be possible to put up signs "No parking" on the route where the bicyclists will be? Would it be possible to ask the drivers to not drive on the same route as the cyclists? I realize that some people need to drive to get to places, especially emergency vehicles and paratransit vehicles. Would it be possible to offer free MUNI during the hours of the Critical Mass? I am trying to think of a win-win situation for everyone.

Bicycle theft is a big quality of life issue for many in this city! I suggest one police officer be assigned to coordinate efforts to reduce bike theft, including a voluntary bicycle ID system. I also suggest more stings, and frequent crackdowns on bicycle "chop shops."

Many of the great cities in the world have dedicated and isolated bicycle lanes. These provide space for bicycles, making this entirely sustainable and pollution free transportation option safer and more appealing to a broader array of residents. My idea may at first sound radical and expensive, especially to those accustomed to automobiles as a fact of life. But cars are killing pedestrian and cyclists in our city, and polluting our air. What I'm proposing is legislation that whenever roadwork is done in SF, isolated bicycle lanes are budgeted in and built. Sound expensive? Consider the cost saved in human Read This Post »

The mayor (and other prominent public officials) should ride a bicycle to work and engagements for several weeks and join the SF cycling community in a critical mass ride --- if we are serious about making SF a livable city, public officials should encourage alternative means of transportation and take the time to see the streets from a bicyclist's perspective.

Choose a random series of days for cops (on foot or bicycles) to show up at locations where homeless people are a nuisance. Not every day, not every other day, but at a random interval so that homeless people don't get into the habit of going to specific places.
