Run a campaign to boycott gangs: "If you have to buy, buy from someone other than gangs." It won't get rid of the drug problem but it will disperse the violence and murders cause by gangs.
For drugs, try licensing (medicinal) drug use like marijuana; legalize low-dosage drugs for recreational use.

Let's take down all of the hanging flower baskets and use the resources to make our neighborhood safe. I've noticed that all of the flowers in the Civic Center and around City Hall look healthy and fresh - but along 3rd Street especially between Folsom & Townsend - they are quickly drying out, many have dead spots and trash in them. Maybe the city has already cut back on maintaining them. The real priority for lower Rincon Hill/Eastern SOMA should be protection. My friend's car was broken into two weeks ago, one of my neighbors was raped and a guy Read This Posty »

In response to your letter I would like to submit the following suggestions for improvements to make San Francisco better in the future. First I want to start with the problem the drug addicts and the homeless. According to my knowledge San Francisco have not enough treatment facilities to get people off drugs and for this reason I would suggest that the City of San Francisco and organizations working with this problem already open up an additional two or three treatment centers for people looking for help. The homeless people who are not addicted to drugs and get welfare money for Read This Posty »

We need to shut down the marijuana trade in the city as well. Its out of control. Call the feds and let them be the instrument, take the heat, etc just like San Diego and Los Angeles did. Put a moratorium on any new dispensaries too.

Many homeless people claim they are begging for money for food (as opposed to drugs or fortified wine). Call their bluff. Set up a food bank location on 6th Street. Sell vouchers on the internet to those who want to give something to the homeless that are redeemable at the food bank.

Attempting to ban Narconon lectures in public schools was not correct. I'd like to see Narconon reinstated as the premiere drug reform. I know that Criminon has some kind of program currently going on in the San Francisco justice system. I'd like to see it expanded to include with the Mayor's community court program which I think is a step in the right direction. The above are secular organizations and the media will howl about Scientology but so what? I'm a native and want reforms that are proven solutions by statistics, not opinion. Thanks.

In places here in the city that have a high intravenous drug use rate, is there a way that we could place SECURE Hazardous Material Receptacles (i.e. syringes, blades) in certain locations? Is this even feasible? If they would be used (by the parties using the aforementioned items), it would certainly help keep dirty needles, etc. off the street.

Dear Gavin,
I think one solution for the Tenderloin would be to make it hard for people to deal/do drugs on the street. Start busting people, start a police presence in the area, use undercover cops. Don't make a huge deal out of it, just do it. The cops can work in teams of 2-4 and systematically jail people. Make it hard for people to smoke crack on the street. Make them scared of jail again. Might I remind you that plenty of children are in the area. Another idea for improving the TL is to paint the street lines again. Read This Posty »

Solution is a difficult question, however, first may I suggest that you define the problem as it should be defined. There are "Homeless" and there are "street people". I believe a homeless person is in a situation where they are without a job, income, or the ability to secure housing. In others words they want to be housed. What I see on the streets of SF are street people. People who choose to be homeless and would rather spend what money they have on substance abuse. I know that substance abuse can lead to homelessness but maybe we need to Read This Posty »

I operate a non profit and agency in SF and live and vote in SF. Violence is totally out of control. I have a proposal that can make a difference. I am including the outline but I have the full proposal ready to go.

1) Promote home ownership by people who already live in the city. People who own houses in the community are invested in the community and will help to care for it.
2) Sharply limit the number of "investment properties" that can be purchased in the city.
3) Provide funding for long-term mental health care. I am a mental health professional, and work every day with people who will never be able to support themselves. These people need our care and compassion. They do not need *bus tickets out of town* where they will become "someone else's problem".
4) For homeless Read This Posty »

Start policing the people who are always shooting up (on hyde, e.g.) in the loin. Also, arrest all the crack dealers that deal at the corner of Golden Gate and Hyde.

I live in Russian Hill, but wind up farther down Polk quite a bit to go out to eat, drink, etc. I love this area and the fact that there seems to be an eclectic mix of people who inhabit it. My issue is that drugs and prostitution seem to be running rampant, and each weekend I see police officers driving by and watching, but doing nothing about it. I assume this is because the arrests take time, and these people just get funneled through a system that is overloaded as it is. Let's all vote to put the Community Read This Posty »
