I wanted to give my support for minimizing plastic bottles in the city. Please check out this article on where plastic ends up.

Dear Mayor Newsom
Bravo on your bottled water position. Attached is an editorial I wrote in the Journal of Food Composition and Analysis with a similar message: Reflections on Water.

YES, YES, YES!!!!!! A million thank-yous, Mayor, for pointing out the tremendous harm that we are doing with bottled water. It is beyond ridiculous to put plastic into the environment to decompose for thousands of years every time we take a drink of water. I know you realize that people are drinking bottled water because it's "the thing to do"- they don't even care where it comes from as long as it comes in a bottle. Seriously- if you're buying Costco brand bottled water to save money, doesn't that say you don't care what kind of water you're drinking? So Read This Posty »

Dear Mayor Newsom,
I just read about your ban on bottled water for the City of San Francisco. I want to applaud your effort in taking another proactive step towards reducing waste, the use of plastic and reducing factors for global warming. If more mayors and/ or citizens were more concerned enough about the environment to recognize the impact of our actions, we would be farther ahead in reducing global warming.
Best regards,

From my review of newspaper articles, it appears that SF only plants about 5000 new trees per year which seems like a small number in the Bay Area. Mayor Newsom has started to donate $ for carbon offsets from his commuting, which is laudible, but this $ likely pays a non-profit to plant trees somewhere else.
Here's the idea: Why not have the city promote a carbon offset program for the Bay Area that would allow donations to go directly toward the Friends of the Urban Forest or a similar agency in the city? While I'm mildly interested in donating Read This Posty »

Smog checks are clearly not being enforced very stringently judging by the foul smoke that comes out of some cars and motorcycles.
Motorcycles should also need to be more quiet. They cause most of the traffic noise in the city and often have poorly tuned engines that must emit a tremendous amount of greenhouse gases.

I've always loved the houseboats in Sausalito. Sure there's some in Mission Bay, but they seem almost extinct. Why not build more barges, have the city create (and lease) the infrastructure underneath, and citizens buy the living quarters - this would make the housing much more reasonable. Have it be 50% populated by teachers, police, firefighters, nurses and civil servants, 25% low income, 25% artsy SOMA types. Recycle human waste into community vegetable gardens ala Findhorn. Have solar power and wifi. Have community spaces for childcare and playground, larger gatherings than fit in a condo space, built in and around Read This Posty »

SF could become the primary think tank and pilot city for green ideas or ideas that help us cope with global warming. We should start the San Francisco Green Institute!!
