The new building at City College that is about to be built over the old reservoirs could serve as a wind generating station. It sits smack dab in the middle of the Alemany wind corridor. If the proposed lots were actually removed and the building built a little higher and with a concave design facing west, it could funnel wind below the building through the lots. This would also help the heating costs of the other campus buildings as it would slow down the wind. Its very difficult to find places to put wind turbines but this is perfect for Read This Posty »

I wanted to give my support for minimizing plastic bottles in the city. Please check out this article on where plastic ends up.

Dear Mayor Newsom
Bravo on your bottled water position. Attached is an editorial I wrote in the Journal of Food Composition and Analysis with a similar message: Reflections on Water.

Can San Francisco afford gas guzzlers from environmental, health and safety standpoint?
Every time I see a big gas guzzling luxury car or an SUV that is violating a traffic law I find myself muttering: what kind of country do I live in? I have never understood why our society rewards the gas guzzlers more than denizens who do everything to reduce global warming. The price of violating a traffic law is the same irrespective of what car you drive despite the fact that a larger vehicle causes more harm to the immediate society. Pedestrians and bicyclist are at a greater Read This Posty »

Charge a tax for every person/home in S.F. that has more than one car. Use that money to fund Muni and support CarShare.
ANOTHER IDEA: For every residence that has one car or none, give them a "coupon" to CarShare or a discount on Muni passes.

Please! Provide several well-marked recycling bins for plastic water bottles at ALL city events. I was dismayed at your recent town hall meeting at Excelsior Boys & Girls Club- and at other recent city-sponsored events- to see all the water bottles and soda cans going into the trash. It's so simple, Mayor! Aren't we supposed to be a GREEN city?

One of our huge problems is limiting green solutions by focusing on the technology end of things. How much energy do we use to transport water to the City that could be retrieved from the aquifer. How much energy do we use repairing flood damage to our streets, hills and such? We could reduce that immediately by changing zoning regulations to legalize and even require homes and small businesses to allow run-off from roofs to reach the ground and soak into the aquifer. It could work just like the Friend of the Urban Forest tree planting program. Have a non Read This Posty »

Hi,
One thing I've noticed over the years is that people like to visibly see their tax dollars spent near their homes. An excellent example is the State's Safe Routes to School Initiative. I think we need to encourage more projects like this. For example, look at the SW 12th Avenue Green Street Project on the Portland State University campus, which has received a national award of honor from the American Society of Landscape Architects. How about a project just like this within every supervisor's district? As a bonus if you can make this happen before Election Day, I will promise Read This Posty »

When Utility Co's upgrade and do sidewalk work - have them move utility to middle of sidewalk to allow for tree planting curbside.

Please stop pushing Compact Fluorescents! I've installed them throughout my house and, frankly, the light quality is poor, the dimmable bulbs work poorly, and I've had a 30% failure rate with $12 bulbs that, aside from the energy savings, are full of toxic Mercury. Please help push for the use of LED bulbs. They are as or more efficient than Compact Fluorescents and are completely Non-Toxic and recyclable. Dimmable LED bulbs are already available (but expensive) and a push from the city could help drive their costs down. Let's be leaders on this issue and steer the nation and the Read This Posty »

You want more people using public transportation. That means more people out of cars, less co2, etc.
I want to use public transportation. I tried it. It is not an option. Why: It is miserable and inefficient beyond endurance.
Examples:
*A trip from SFO took over an hour. An 11 minute commute. A wait in fog, no shelter for over half an hour at Balboa Park for a bus that comes every 30 minutes - occasionally, being the main problem.
*A need to access my home on Mt Davidson via either Balboa or Glen Park Station on a weekend from the Mission, a ten Read This Posty »

My husband and I are at a loss to comprehend why wind energy is not harnessed in our city! Various parts of our city are perfect venues for the intallation of power-generating windmills -- clean energy that can lower cost and harness a free resource. We traveled to Copenhagen last year and were noticed windmills along the banks of waterways, even at the far stretches of the shores.
I have heard that some people are opposed to the look of windmills. Perhaps a lower energy bill or subsidized windmill would appeal to them. Or, a remote location, on beach heads Read This Posty »

Certain SOMA streets such as 7th Street between Bryant and Market, and Howard between 4th and 11th, are unneccessarily wide, a waste of valuable land and arguably adding to the "concrete jungle" effect. We should implement boulevards much like Octavia, with tree-lined medians and greenspace.

Santa Clara County was forced to cease pumping fresh water, from it's treatment plant, into the bay. So, instead, they pipe this water to the greenry alongside the freeways and into the parks. Saves water.

Install cardboard and plastic recycling bins in all coffee shops to enable easy recycling of the lids, cardboard wraps, and possibly the cups themselves.

I highly recommend that coffee shops in SF (as well as potentially other eating establishments) should have recycling containers available for recycling their cups and paper goods.

Cars emit most of their pollution when they first accelerate from a stop sign or traffic light. Once your car is going, very little pollution is being emitted. If we could time the traffic lights on more of our larger streets, we could significantly reduce our green house gas emissions without having to think about it. Also, the frustration factor would go way down for people trying to just get across town. This would reduce speeding to avoid the next light, since you'd have to drive at the required speed to avoid overrunning the next light. And it would reduce Read This Posty »

In order to encourage tree planting, Mayor Newson should find out if it is feasible when babies are born in SF hospitals for the hospital to give the new parents a letter from him encouraging them to have a tree planted in their babies honor to make their child's future a brighter and healthier one. The letter should link to FUF and stress that even if they cannot afford a whole tree they can be tree partners with others.
Similarly if local mortuaries could hand out a similar letter encouraging people to honor their loved one with a tree, a legacy Read This Posty »

There are people across the street from me who have 5 cars and 1 motorcycle. This is not just one house but several on this block with more than 3 cars. I would recommend a tax on 3 vehicles or more and have the tax solely go to making SF more GREEN. How about a 50.00 tax and the person would need to provide 3 references to verify the address with DMV.
