When a police officer hears an especially loud motorcycle pass by, ticket it.  Simple, affordable, and legal.  No new laws, no new staff, just do the job. The MTA needs to resolve the scheduling problems with the Metro. Most specifically the issue with the trains running in packs, instead of spaced every 7 to15 minutes. I spoke with Kenneth McDonald (COO MTA) about this in on Nov. 21, whom told me "they had someone looking at the problem" .  Here are a couple of proposals: 1>  Dynamically allocate the trains from the Embarcadero and Ocean Ave Stations. 2>  Tie the ends of the "L" and "N" lines together and dynamically allocate these trains as necessary. Central Troubleshooter Muni Central, needs an executive, with authority and decision making powers to troubleshoot day-to-day problems when buses are missing.   Currently and for decades, when Central confronts a problem it does nothing. If four buses are missing, then they will sit on their butts all day and there won't be any buses for two hours.   Seven N Judah's go inbound and none go outbound. Will they turn one around? Nope. Why not highlight SF's high tech potential and natural beauty by creating kiosks in the BART / MUNI stations where passengers can do a trip planner, tourists can get suggestions of where to go / what to see - and how to use Public Transportation to get there - lots of possibilities!   I don't think any other city in the US has anything like that - and it would be terrific, brighten up the whole underground area, besides being incredibly useful. MUNI: exhibit some political will to make a small change which will result in a huge improvement to MUNI bus service -- eliminate the "one stop for every block" concept in favor of having bus stops on every other block.  Bus service will be dramatically sped up, making it a more attractive prospect for commuters.  As a side benefit, hundreds, and potentially thousands of parking spaces (with associated revenue) will open up, too. 1. From time to time there is a safety problem on Muni buses - rowdy kids; a drunk that won't get off; etc. There should be an alarm that the driver could activate to call police in the vicinity. Maybe the problem passengers would get off before the police arrived. OK. 2. If not already done, there should be anger management classes for the bus drivers - relative to both passengers and to the drivers. Have seen both lose it in the past month. 3. Mr. Mayor, We all know MUNI is currently a mess. Particularly light rail since the T line was implemented.  The N line in particular has been a nightmare.  It seems that the head of MUNI is a great mouthpiece, but shows little in the way of action and solution.  It also seems logical that the city, and the Mayor, need to stop looking at MUNI as a public transportation entity and more as a supply chain.  What are the most effective, efficient and profitable supply chains; and how do we co-op those principles for our city are also questions that should Read This Posty »

Parking fine fees have been increased to help off-set MUNI budget shortages. Why not increase moving violation fees to help increase traffic and, more importantly, pedestrian safety. As Susan Leal once said, "it is anarchy on our streets." And the situation has only gotten worse since her stance led to an increase in the number of traffic cameras. Although never happy about advocating for anything Big-Brother like, if drivers (and motorcyclists and bikers) will not comport themselves in a safe and lega manner, then the City has an obligation to intervene. I have been reading about the money lost for Muni when passengers jump on for a free ride.  I see it myself.  I was thinking that SF/Muni should install on every Muni back door a machine where you swipe your Muni pass.  This would gain entrance to the bus/train.  All cash paying riders must go through the front door. I know it may slow up some of the busy stops, but it would probably be the cheapest way to solve the problems.  Most other major cities have the major subway type stops with the same idea.  Since SF makes city Read This Posty »

To get more people to take buses I suggest putting GPS devices on each bus and build software that will allow anyone with a GPS enabled phone or device to enter their destination and the software will tell them what bus to take, what time the bus will arrive at the bus stop and how long it will take to walk to the bus stop.  That will enable someone to be at work and set an alert for the 6pm bus and then their alarm will go off 5 minutes before it arrives at the bus stop.  It will also Read This Posty »

Because installing a garage in an existing building that doesn't already have one removes and privatizes a valuable public parking space from the street, (let alone trees, utility poles) Garage addition permits should be priced much higher.  Take the price of renting parking (conservatively $150/month) times, say, 50 years, is $90,000.  These funds should be directed at the MTA/Muni for mitigation of traffic problems and pedestrian safety programs.  It would also dissuade homeowners from destroying the facades of historic homes. I doubt I am alone in feeling that MUNI is the aspect of city government that most effects my day-to-day life. I just read in the San Francisco Examiner that 16.8% of MUNI drivers are absent from work on any given day, and that that shortfall is made up by other drivers being paid overtime. This seems like an extraordinarily number to me, which must have a highly negative impact on MUNIs budget and the ability of buses to run on time (which is really what matters most to me). I work for the City and County of SF in the Dept of Health. I think we badly need a single City of SF Services Building that could be built somewhere near City Hall. Many of the city's departments are spread all over in leased space that are making lots of money for the landlords, and losing lots of money for the city. If we were all combined in one large building, clients could get many of their health services and social services in one location, and residents could find building, planning, MUNI, DPW, etc all in one place.
