Traffic & Public Transportation
April 25th, 2007 9:06 am

Why is SF lagging behind London and NYC? Aren't we supposed to be the most progressive city - particularly when it comes to environmental measures. SF needs to get on board with these other cities and charge drivers a congestion tax for driving downtown. This would make the city cleaner, easier to get around, and a hell of a lot more environmentally friendly. The revenue, of course, would need to go toward expanding and improving the quality of the city's public transit options. I guarantee there'd be far fewer cars downtown if, for example, BART extended further down the Peninsula Read This Posty »

Fine Drivers that Stop in Crosswalks
April 23rd, 2007 9:47 pm

1. Raise money by issuing tickets to commuters who instead of stopping before red lights, stop after the lights on the pedestrian crosswalks. Worst offenders are found on the corner of Folsom and Fremont after 5PM. Pull the ones on the sidewalk aside and issue $100 tickets. Easy money and you save the lives of pedestrians who have to dodge traffic because their cross walks have cars on them. 2. For the last year I've seen broken glass  from people breaking into cars all along Folsom street especially before and after 2nd street. Why isn't the police preventing this? Why don't Read This Posty »

Please fix Muni
April 22nd, 2007 9:09 pm

The following are my recommendations: 1. Vending Machines in every underground station w/monthly passes and tokens 2. Stop Bus Stacking -- I have often waiting 20+ minutes for the 6 or the 71 bus.  When one final arrives it is followed by one to two other 6s or 71s buses.  This is common complaint of the F line as well. 3. No school rides during peak hours.  It's great that SF kids are using transit for school trips, but do they need to go during the peak rush hour?  It is impossible to get on the N and breath the mornings that they Read This Posty »

Gondola System
April 22nd, 2007 10:58 am

How about instead of a subway, we have a gondola system like they do at the ski resorts.  It could go from Pier 39 all they way to Market, stopping anywhere in between.  Instead of wasting money digging tunnels, all that would be necessary would be large Chair lift type of poles that would support the cables in the air.  Plus SF folks are used to tons of wires and cables above their streets anyways. Think of the benefits.  First off you would be creating a tourist attraction, creating needed revenue for the city, and offering above the street views.  The Read This Posty »

Eliminate “loading zone only” spaces…
April 20th, 2007 4:40 pm

1) I complain about the rude drivers in the city who run stop signs and don't care if you're in the cross walk or not.  I don't know how to fix this except to perhaps have enforcement campaigns work certain areas of the city.  I jog through the city streets and every single time I encounter a careless driver who makes me fear for my safety.  Also, the heavy traffic is really frustrating, but I don't know what to suggest about that.   2) Parking is obviously a problem in this city, which leads to double parking which is another problem.  Read This Posty »

Make MUNI family friendly
April 19th, 2007 11:14 am

Change the MUNI rules/signs for elderly and disabled seating to include adults carrying children.  They offer this seating preference in London on the Tube.  This would help make San Francisco and MUNI a little more kid (and parent) friendly. Name Withheld Read This Posty »

MUNI
April 19th, 2007 9:21 am

This is not a sexy solution to the difficulties of riding MUNI with children, but it is inexpensive and important:  emphasize drivers' need to wait for mothers and young children to be seated before speeding off!  Alternately, reserve the front section of the bus for pregnant women and young children along with seniors and handicapped passengers. A third, more difficult, proposal is to create a section in the rear of the bus where parents can keep their strollers open rather than folding them up.  These solutions are practical and green, and would make a huge difference in MUNI's accessibility. Muni Metro
April 19th, 2007 9:05 am

There are an unacceptable number of delays on the Metro. On Metro lines from Caltrain (formerly N, now T and J), trains have to wait for as much as 10+ minutes to enter the tunnel between Folsom and Embarcadero, and then often stop multiple times in the tunnel before reaching Embarcadero station. The situation is similar for the J and N entering the tunnel at Church St. Separately, passengers waiting for a given line may wait for 25+ minutes while multiple trains for every other line pass. This is because trains on a single line (e.g., N Judah) bunch up, Read This Posty »

Buses to the Marina and Parking Availibility
April 19th, 2007 8:37 am

I propose the city of San Francisco designate another bus line to and from the Marina, something similar to the 45, while avoiding the congestion of traveling through China Town.  There is a desperate need for additional transportation throughout the Marina especially during peak commuter times. Secondly, I suggest finding some way to increase parking availability in residential areas.  All too often there seems to be an excess of parking meters and unnecessary no parking zones, when the space would be more beneficial and more accommodating for drivers, if they were allowed to park for at least two hours without having Read This Posty »

Send the homless to Sacramento
April 18th, 2007 4:15 pm

1) I think a tax break or a gift or discounted fast-passes should be given to people that take MUNI. When I walk down Columbus in the morning everyday to work, 97% of all the cars have solo drivers (on cell phones, honking). 2) I know this sounds heartless, but, why not send the homeless to the Capitol?  Maybe that would open their eyes to the growing problem. Housing and Global Warming
April 18th, 2007 1:33 pm

I've always loved the houseboats in Sausalito. Sure there's some in Mission Bay, but they seem almost extinct. Why not build more barges, have the city create (and lease) the infrastructure underneath, and citizens buy the living quarters - this would make the housing much more reasonable. Have it be 50% populated by teachers, police, firefighters, nurses and civil servants, 25% low income, 25% artsy SOMA types. Recycle human waste into community vegetable gardens ala Findhorn. Have solar power and wifi. Have community spaces for childcare and playground, larger gatherings than fit in a condo space, built in and around Read This Posty »

MUNI Needs Help!
April 18th, 2007 1:15 pm

The people who planned and created a problem are never the best people to solve the problem. The managers are Muni are too close to the operations and they need help.  Mistakes like completely removing the 15 line bus before actually testing the T-line could have been avoided.  Testing a train on the weekends is not the same thing as running that train at rush hour to see where the bottlenecks exist.  Asking the right questions reduces I rode the T-line with Gavin Newsome and we had a conversation about ways to improve the Muni system, and I would like Read This Posty »

Beautifying the City and Managing its Growth
April 18th, 2007 10:59 am

Dear Mr. Mayor, I want to tell you what a fine job you are doing and I applaud your efforts in managing this city. Thank you.  I do have some suggestions for beautifying the city and managing its growth. BUSINESS LOOP I applaud the redevelopment of South of Market and the beautiful skyscrapers rising in our downtown area. One idea to help manage the traffic flow of the downtown area is to create a business zone loop. That would mean creating one way boulevards that are open to cars, buses and bicycles. Here are some suggestions: Create a business Read This Posty »

Muni #15 (9X)
April 18th, 2007 10:26 am

Muni killed the 15 and replaced it with the 9X due to changes on the 3rd street corridor.  The problem is that the 9X doesn't pass through FIDA / SOMA as the 15 used to do.  Now it is particularly difficult for people who live in Russian Hill, North Beach, or Telegraph to get to and from Downtown.  These are vital residential neighborhoods that ought to have at least 1 option for getting downtown via public transit.  Does Stockton / Chinatown really need a 3rd bus line at the expense of everyone else?  It simply doesn't make sense.  Why don't Read This Posty »

Bicycle Thoroughfares
April 18th, 2007 10:25 am

Pick two north/south, and east/west corridors which have multiple lanes in each direction, such as Van Ness (N/S) and Oak & Fell (E/W).  Make the innermost lane a bicycle freeway, separated on the right from the traffic lanes by a physical barrier, such as thinner versions of the cement barriers used on freeways.  Bikes would enter and exit at intersections, possibly specially designated with a light position for bikes only. I realize there is some sort of plan to expand the "bike network" of paths and bike lanes in the city.  However, the fact is that the existing lanes are not Read This Posty »

Muni
April 18th, 2007 10:20 am

Not a solution but a cry for HELP. BUSES-why no "low to the curb" buses-easy for handicapped, seniors, strollers, small children. Why are the buses so FILTHY-often hard to see out of windows. Smaller less affluent cities: e.g. Pittsburgh, PA do not have "state of the art" buses-clean-drivers in full, clean, pressed uniforms. such neglect problems. Name Withheld Read This Posty »

Free Muni
April 18th, 2007 10:09 am

Make Muni fare free for a one year trial period and simultaneously launch a PBS style pledge campaign to "keep muni free" beyond the one year trial. The City will collect more in pledges than the cost of current fare collections. Gene Eplett Read This Posty »

Advertising
April 18th, 2007 9:50 am

Although I've never been a fan of blanketing the City with billboards and other forms of advertising, I think its time to look into the opportunity of making extra money by allowing more creative forms of advertising into key areas of the City. Advertising that is as much about the art as it is about selling something. I'm sure if ad agencies were involved and revenue to be gained companies would spend - especially if it meant drawing more attention to the product. More creative ways to draw in revenue need to be thought up instead of jacking up parking Read This Posty »

Homeless People / Panhandlers
April 18th, 2007 9:49 am

Get the Homeless / Panhandlers off the streets!  Sleeping on streets is unhealthy and scary to look at.  Sleeping on streets should be made punishable.  (Compare to wrong parking).  Give "tickets" - after 3 tickets, enact some kind of remedy, i.e. sending them back to where they came from.    Give them community jobs in turn for housing and food.  Provide job advancements opportunities.  There's plenty of community work to be done, i.e. gardening for offices, churches, schools, businesses, residences and parks.  I'm sure residences will even be willing to provide for "tips" for this service.  Create swat teams of homeless Read This Posty »
