Police that walk beats meet and greet local folks
September 21st, 2007 8:53 am

They are visible, watchful, and able to make friends. They reduce crime by their being on the beat. We need to do this now in San Francisco. It works in New York, Chicago and even in sprawling east Los Angeles Until crime is arrested in san francisco every other thing is way down the list in my opinion. thank you. Gangs are made up of kids are either unloved or not protected in our schools from bullies. They join for strength and protection. Only after joining do they realize the fatal challenges of gang life. It starts in homes where Read This Posty »

Clean Streets
September 12th, 2007 12:14 pm

I was just in NYC and was amazed at how much cleaner their streets are than ours. As I'd walk down the street at 8am, the sidewalks had all been hosed down and seemed almost pristine. As opposed to Market Street in SF. I work at 3rd and Market, and the streets are disgustingly dirty. Obviously we have water issues they may not have, but the machines which "clean" our streets using no water do  not do the trick. It really needs to be addressed as it adversely affects how one views our remarkable city. Amy Nachman Read This Posty »

Bike Fee and New MUNI contract
July 23rd, 2007 9:18 am

Problem:  Not enough city revenues. Solution: Implement a city and commuter tax, akin to NYC. that way, renters and commuters will pay into the city, and the city will have a steady stream of income without having to continually raise fees that adversely affects quality of life (ie. parking fines, filing fees for superior ct, muni fares, etc.). Problem:  Not enough money to implement bike lanes, etc. Solution:  Every bike owner pays registration fee annually. Money garnered will go towards making safer bike lanes. Also, enforce traffic violations of bikes as well with red light cameras. Bikes could be tracked if they Read This Posty »

Traffic Congestion
June 13th, 2007 9:48 am

Congestion pricing on bridge tolls--no additional administrative overhead since the infrastructure is already in place. NYC is considering such a move, and London has already done it. The bridges would be much smaller scale, but so easy to do! Ben Elchenberg Read This Posty »

Traffic Lights
June 1st, 2007 9:03 am

I have sent this to you before.  I am a new yorker and know a little about traffic lights.  In san francisco, there are many streets that could use coordination of the lights.  When I am driving, I look around and see few cars, but yet I am stuck in traffic because the lights are not in coordination.  In new york, there is much more efficient use of traffic lights and thus traffic moves much faster.  If you can only do one street, let it be Columbus Avenue running from North Beach to Downtown.  It is terrible.  My light goes Read This Posty »

Homeless in SF
May 23rd, 2007 2:09 pm

Why can't we "clean up" the SF homeless problem the same way Rudy G "cleaned" New York's?  I was just in New York & didn't get hassled at all by homeless people wanting money & food, etc which makes our city so undesireable. T Tyler Read This Posty »

Mandatory Garbage Service
May 21st, 2007 8:21 am

Make it mandatory for each business and each household  to have garbbge service.  AND work with Sunset Scavenger for people to get rid of access garbage.  That would stop some of the illegal dumping and people who are too cheap to have service at all to use neighborhood cans.  New York has pickup for all, and their city is very clean. Trash on the sidewalks and streets
May 1st, 2007 2:43 pm

Every day I walk from the Powell Street Muni station to my office on Sutter Street.  There is trash on the sidewalks on Ellis Street, Mason Street and Sutter Street.  How about if we introduced a program which would fine the owners of the businesses if they do not regularly clean up the sidewalks and street in front of their business?  It's another made in New York program which we should copy. Also, there are many of the recycling and garbage containers which have strewn all around them from people rummaging through them at night.  I don't have a solution for Read This Posty »

Tree Planting
April 30th, 2007 3:33 pm

A significant increase in tree planting was published as an initiative by Mayor Bloomberg in NYC in last week's New York Times, and this would be an excellent idea for San Francisco. The article suggested that NYC will plant 1 million more trees which is a significant commitment. In SF, there are many blocks in the Mission and Hunters Point that have no trees or very few despite the excellent weather, and this contributes to a sense of urban blight. Per the Friends of the Urban Forest website, tree plantings improve whole neighborhoods, increase property values, promote civic pride and Read This Posty »

Traffic & Public Transportation
April 25th, 2007 9:06 am

Why is SF lagging behind London and NYC? Aren't we supposed to be the most progressive city - particularly when it comes to environmental measures. SF needs to get on board with these other cities and charge drivers a congestion tax for driving downtown. This would make the city cleaner, easier to get around, and a hell of a lot more environmentally friendly. The revenue, of course, would need to go toward expanding and improving the quality of the city's public transit options. I guarantee there'd be far fewer cars downtown if, for example, BART extended further down the Peninsula Read This Posty »

Eliminate “loading zone only” spaces…
April 20th, 2007 4:40 pm

1) I complain about the rude drivers in the city who run stop signs and don't care if you're in the cross walk or not.  I don't know how to fix this except to perhaps have enforcement campaigns work certain areas of the city.  I jog through the city streets and every single time I encounter a careless driver who makes me fear for my safety.  Also, the heavy traffic is really frustrating, but I don't know what to suggest about that.   2) Parking is obviously a problem in this city, which leads to double parking which is another problem.  Read This Posty »

Graffiti and Trash
April 18th, 2007 9:47 am

Dear Mr. Mayor: While I support all the wonderful development deals, the biotech, the SOMA developments, etc. I can't help but feel the quality of life is deteriorating in many of our neighborhoods due to out of control graffiti and dumping of trash on the streets and sidewalks. I for one am tired of living in filth whenever I'm outside my home in the Mission. I'm old enough to remember as time when peer pressure would work. A gentle reminder to someone throwing away a drink cup in a doorway was enough to get that person to stop, think, and dispose of Read This Posty »

Homless that ruin SF and Market St.
April 17th, 2007 4:18 pm

Study what NYC did in the 90's to completely turn around that city's homeless situation.  If you can't fix the problem, please resign and let someone who can have the job.  If this isn't your #1 priority, it should be.  By far. Name Withheld Read This Posty »
