Fund and Enforce Laura’s Law
November 8th, 2007 3:19 pm

Congratulations on your re-election, Mayor Newsom!   Please make your second-term priority to revisit the issue of enforcing and funding Laura's Law. You have cited "institutional resistance" for holding back on your promise to do so.  You overcame social forces against supporting equal marriage rights for gay couples because it was the right thing to do.  I applaud that decision.   Funding and enforcing Laura's Law is right in keeping with your commitment to reduce homelessness and match our destitute and severely mentally ill residents with the services they need.  Please do not allow any more psych bed reductions at SFGH.  Please support Assertive Read This Posty »

Wheel Locks for Shopping Carts
October 18th, 2007 9:03 am

Why don't we add locks to the carts, so that they can't be taken off the supermarket property? There is already a system in place in DC. If you go to Safeway and try to take your shopping cart out of the parking lot it locks up, the wheels don't move and guess what you can't take it with you. This would reduce the number of carts being used by the homeless all over our city. It's a very simple solution. AG Read This Posty »

A Walk In The Park
October 12th, 2007 9:37 am

If everyone who values fitness - and everyone with membership to a gym - took one vegetable bag from home, used it inside out like a rubber glove, and "touched their toes" just one more time to pick up a piece of trash or two, and dropped it in the very next trash bin they see, they'd soon realize they feel much greater happiness.  It's easy as a walk in the park.  Name Withheld Read This Posty »

Take Back the Shopping Carts
October 10th, 2007 9:05 am

Easy - Have those that own the shopping carts (Safeway, etc) reclaim their property. Even in this Politically Correct City, it does not take a very smart person to actually institute this smart solution. Come on guys, get some ba***. We voted for you because of that! Don't sweep this under the rug - The City is bleeding piss and S*** - PLEASE Name Withheld Read This Posty »

Really, really affordable housing!
October 8th, 2007 12:05 pm

Why not build "affordable" housing for low-income and working-class people, like me? Modest little condos that don't cost $1 Million dollars!  You tore down all those low-income welfare hotels, and now we have this seemingly endless homeless problem. WHY ? Peter White Read This Posty »

Noise is a serious problem in the city
October 8th, 2007 11:56 am

It contributes to stress and negatively impacts quality of life in a city with tightly built neighborhoods. I was very unpleasantly surprised that construction is allowed to go on until 8pm at night all over the city (no permit required), including residential neighborhoods.   I experienced this unpleasant fact in the Mission when Fire Station #7  decided to saw and hammer all night building a building in their lot.  I've lived in other cities and most construction was not allowed in residential neighborhoods (except in emergency) after 6pm.  The term "keeping the peace" could be loosely applied here. I suggest the Read This Posty »

Homeless Outreach in SOMA
October 3rd, 2007 12:29 pm

This SOMA outreach program in the Chronicle is a GREAT idea.  Daly and the others just don't get how disgusting our streets have become.  Don't they ever walk around downtown?? I hope this plan goes through.  This is a big win for San Francisco! David Read This Posty »

Promoting Goodness as a Growth Industry
October 1st, 2007 10:33 am

Concerning Chronicle article "S.F. Boom Boosts Mayor". We expect Mayor Newsom and Board of Supervisors to create a better San Francisco. Though they have an effect, to actually transform San Francisco into the place we say we yearn for, each San Franciscan must change. You and I have contributed individually in making San Francisco and our callousness, insensitivity and self-centeredness maintain what it is. Virtually everybody in San Francisco lives better, longer lives with playthings the wealthy of 50 years ago could not imagine. Nevertheless personal wealth and comfort remains paramount, we continue to fight or resist – everybody being against somebody, Read This Posty »

Take Back the Shopping Carts
September 26th, 2007 12:51 pm

I spent over 30 years in law enforcement and am sad to see the state of the city and the morale of the SFPD heading south as each day passes. Now for the easy solution to the homeless problem that was never pursued and apparently has no backing from businesses or spineless city officials because of that dumb "let's not offend anyone rule" RECLAIM THE SHOPPING CARTS AND RETURN THEM TO THEIR OWNERS (BUSINESSES) - WITHOUT THE HOMELESS FOLKS' "CONDOS ON WHEELS" THERE WILL BE LESS HOMELESS, LESS CRIME, LESS PUBLIC NUISANCES AND A CLEANER CITY. There was this suggestion on the table awhile Read This Posty »

Homeless cleanup

Make Muni an outsourced, self-funding service
September 18th, 2007 10:50 am

Over the past three years I've been riding Muni every day to get to work, taking a local bus to muni rail to my office.  I also frequently take other buses and lines to get about the city during the day. Buses are frequently late or missing, many buses are damaged with scratched windows or painted graffiti, and I've filed complaints on the Muni website without receiving any acknowledgment or response.  Buses are either packed during rush hours, or totally empty, riding though neighborhoods with no riders into the late hours of the night. Here's a fresh idea: make Muni an outsourced, Read This Posty »

Green Newspaper Bins
September 10th, 2007 9:41 am

In areas where homeless and transient people congregate, those new green paper bins should be removed.  Example: The corner of 7th/Market (check cashing corner) there are two of these green bins. They are separated just enough for a man to stand in between them and urinate w/o being exposed. The urine cascades out in front of the BART/MUNI entry stairs. This happens every day. It smells terrible and tourist notice them doing it which makes our City look bad. Terry Clark Read This Posty »

Manage Golf Courses

Quality of Life
August 2nd, 2007 1:05 am

I think two of the problems facing this city, an inordinately high homeless population, and the quality of life criminals, can be addressed simultaneously with one humane solution: a tent city/jail. Take a nice piece of unused land, erect a tent city, put a fence around it and let the homeless live there. Naturally, many are mentally ill, so they can occupy the hospital beds as needed, but the rest of the scafflaws can just live obliviously, peacefully and happily out of doors, as they so love to do, in a tent city away from the civilized citizens Read This Posty »

Design opportunities for young designers
July 25th, 2007 9:28 am

There should be an effort to encourage young designers to help improve certain areas of our city. There are many examples of places and things that an investment in good design could really improve, or make work better. The temporary police barriers on the Embarcadero near the ballpark separating the MUNI tracks and Hallidie Plaza are two examples of design opportunities. Just having a well-designed, beautiful solution, however, would be missing the opportunity to encourage young and talented designers in San Francisco to participate in the effort. There should be more design Read This Posty »

Quality of Life & Crime
July 17th, 2007 8:26 am

My solution is that you finally sack up and cash in your high approval ratings. To your credit; yet, regardless of merit... you've been afforded exceptionally high approval ratings. Thereby, you're running virtually unopposed. However, this will not be the case 4-years from now when you run for a bigger, more conservative office. Use today to win tomorrow. Let's clean up our city sidewalks. First, dump Heather Fong. Next, create a centralized jail to house the homeless. Run it like 3 hots and a cot for three months at a time. Use the incarceration to aid education, medication or behavior Read This Posty »

More Treatment Centers
June 13th, 2007 9:47 am

In response to your letter I would like to submit the following suggestions for improvements to make San Francisco better in the future. First I want to start with the problem the drug addicts and the homeless. According to my knowledge San Francisco have not enough treatment facilities to get people off drugs and for this reason I would suggest that the City of San Francisco and  organizations working with this problem already open up an additional two or three treatment centers for people looking for help. The homeless people who are not addicted to drugs and get welfare money for Read This Posty »

Graffiti Solution
June 12th, 2007 2:46 pm

A law aimed at the perpetrator, not the property owner/victim.  Also, the law must have a strong enough sentence to matter, or there's no point bothering to try and enforce it.  An estimate should be created for all costs pertaining to the apprehension including: painting over graffiti, police officers, judges, court reporters, secretaries, prosecuting attorneys pay and costs, etc., all jail costs including food, electricity, janitorial, etc.  They should pay for everything - taxpayers shouldn't have to pick up the tab.  If they're under 18, their parents should be held accountable.  If they own a house or a car, their Read This Posty »
