Hello Mayor Newsom,
Have you ever considered having TSA style locks placed on the blue recycling bins in San Francisco? I think this would help a lot with the homeless problem (particularly at the recycling center in GG park) and also help to protect people from identity theft.
The locks could have two keys one for the bin user and another general key for the waste management workers.
The money the city saves not having to pay for bottles & cans that are stolen out of recycling bins would probably pay for the locks and even generate more revenue for Read This Posty »

Deputize Sunset Scavenger to issue citations for failing to properly recycle.

Excellent idea to ban them. Here's another idea, ban the paper ones too. The Dutch don't give out bags of any kind. If you forget to bring your own grocery bags, then you have to buy a big, reusable one for around 5 Euros. Smart. It gets people in the habit of reusing. It is one more step towards not being a "throw-away" culture.
Thanks for reading.

Dear Gavin Newsom,
San Francisco is doing a great job in leading the nation in the Green Earth effort. However I do have a suggestion about the recycling of plastic bottles in the U.S.. I feel that legislation is necessary to mandate recycling, by forcing companies like Coca Cola whom also owns a big portion of the bottled water industry rights, to advertise in their commercials, the fact that recycling is a necessary part of going green, as millions of gallons of oil are used to make these bottles. People need to be reminded that by not recycling plastic, it's just Read This Posty »

an Idea:
What if the city designed and sold a nice water bottle (dishwasher safe, recycleable, etc. ) that residents could fill up with tap water (and ice?) instead of constantly buying small bottles of water? If it was well-designed, with a nice San Francisco logo, with proceeds going to improving city services/cleaning up the streets (homelessness, etc.) it could become "hip" to support the city and the environment as we hydrate ourselves.
This way individuals could contribute to this environment push as well.
Just an idea...
Thanks,

Please! Provide several well-marked recycling bins for plastic water bottles at ALL city events. I was dismayed at your recent town hall meeting at Excelsior Boys & Girls Club- and at other recent city-sponsored events- to see all the water bottles and soda cans going into the trash. It's so simple, Mayor! Aren't we supposed to be a GREEN city?

I get the Examiner, never read it, and sometimes wait for it to pile up before I recycle them. I know I could probably clean it up each time I get one but I NEVER READ THAT CRAPPY PAPER and don't think they should be allowed to litter our sidewalks if we didn't specifically request their "newspaper". Fine them. Same goes for restaurants that rubber band their menus to our doors. I specifically never go to these restaurants due to them being annoying. Not to mention the food probably sucks if they are so desperate they need to go door-to-door Read This Posty »

make sf a safer place for those who wish to bike. designated biking lanes that are wide and protected from motorized vehicles.
plant more fruit baring trees in sf - a bit like eden.
make recycling education mandatory for those seeking residency.
establish a spiritual center in sf - perhaps a large labyrinth - something ecumenical.

Problem: There is alot of garbage in the park, alongside walking trails, etc. and alot of it is generated by the homeless that live in the park.
Solution: Offer a paid garbage pick-up program to people much like the 5 cent can redemption program. Give people garbage bags and based on weight, give them an amt of money for the pick-up. You will find that the ability to make some money will motivate alot of people to start picking up trash--much like the way I see people collecting disgarded soda cans.

Install cardboard and plastic recycling bins in all coffee shops to enable easy recycling of the lids, cardboard wraps, and possibly the cups themselves.

I highly recommend that coffee shops in SF (as well as potentially other eating establishments) should have recycling containers available for recycling their cups and paper goods.

I am S.F. born and raised and have had many ideas but don't know if they are feasible with all the political machines involved but here it goes.
First -- Could someone, working between different depts. in the city, start a job program as a paid trainee exempt. position at say min. wage- for unemployed to do the work of interest, learn the job for experience, and be paid? Example a employed City Gardener trains the person on site- the weeds get pulled , grass trimmed, hedges, etc. which does not seem to be the case all the parks and playgrounds Read This Posty »

The City of Phoenix, AZ like many others, has a wonderful municipal trash and recycling program that San Francisco could mimic. The City of Phoenix provides large plastic covered containers to all residential customers. One receptacle is green; it is for trash and garbage that is not recycled. The other can is blue for all recyclable items (code 1 and 2 plastics, code 6 foam, glass, paper, advertising mail, magazines, newspapers, cardboard/chipboard, milk cartons, aluminum, and metal). The green container is picked up once a week on Monday or Tuesday and the blue on Wednesday or Thursday. Our residential waste Read This Posty »

In order to promote recycling and decrease trash on sidewalks place waste containers in tandem. Then people who are interested in collecting bottles and cans for their deposits will have an easier time of it and won't leave not salvagable debris on the sidewalks.
