There is already a solution - bike lanes; which are largely unused. The sidewalk is already full of runners, walkers, tourists, moms with carriages etc. Bikes are dangerous and should not be allowed. I ride often and I use the bike lanes. Bikes should follow the same rules as cars. The benefit to cyclists is they don't have to dodge pedestrians. The bike coalition is fighting for cyclists rights and I agree, but cyclists should do their part and be courteous, conscientious riders. Please ban bikes along the Embarcadero. The bike lanes are already in place.
Thanks,

A cute little crab ("no dumping") sign marked the storm drain, showing where to poke the stick to clear leaves away. Then the intersection and walkway drained so quickly it was fun to watch. Crab signs might be too expensive to install on pre-existing sidewalks. Would it be a good idea to paint small aqua arrows on curbs above the storm drains that routinely get blocked and hidden by puddles - the ones DPW gets called to clear a lot? Then maybe folks could just clear them quickly and spare DPW on busy, rainy days.

I believe every merchant should be responsible for maintaining litter free and clean sidewalks regardless of what part of the City the store is located.

Many intersections in the city are very dangerous for pedestrians. Traffic lights should be set for four-way stops, as they are in other major cities, to allow pedestrians to safely cross. Also, more $ should be allocated for pedestrian crosswalk signals.

Many mornings as I commute to work I will find large rolling garbage bins blocking the left lane of O'Farrell between Van Ness and Polk. The garbage men should roll these dumpsters back onto the sidewalk so that traffic does not have to clear out of that lane.

I was just in NYC and was amazed at how much cleaner their streets are than ours. As I'd walk down the street at 8am, the sidewalks had all been hosed down and seemed almost pristine. As opposed to Market Street in SF. I work at 3rd and Market, and the streets are disgustingly dirty. Obviously we have water issues they may not have, but the machines which "clean" our streets using no water do not do the trick. It really needs to be addressed as it adversely affects how one views our remarkable city.

Since the city doesn't seem to care about keeping the trees trimmed & the flowers on the light poles watered, you should remove the trees or just chop off all the low hanging branches up to about 9 feet so I can walk on the sidewalk without feeling like I'm running a gauntlet and take down the hanging flowers. They only really look good near city hall but around my house, they're all brown, dead and smell bad.

My solution is that you finally sack up and cash in your high approval ratings. To your credit; yet, regardless of merit... you've been afforded exceptionally high approval ratings. Thereby, you're running virtually unopposed. However, this will not be the case 4-years from now when you run for a bigger, more conservative office. Use today to win tomorrow. Let's clean up our city sidewalks. First, dump Heather Fong. Next, create a centralized jail to house the homeless. Run it like 3 hots and a cot for three months at a time. Use the incarceration to aid education, medication or behavior Read This Posty »

Return to having a monthly large item disposal day where people can set out mattresses, couches, etc. that they no longer want and have them picked up by Sunset Scavenger.
It's a great thing to do for two reasons. 1) When bulky items are put on the street once a month, people will scavenge the sidewalks the night before and find re-usable items that will work fine in their own homes. This reduces how much we put into landfills and helps people with less money get by. 2) It discourages random dumping by people who are unsure of how to Read This Posty »

The streets aren't dirty; the sidewalks are. We can barely find a place to park as it is.
Instead, increase sidewalk cleaning. Put as many sidewalk cleaners in the Mission on a daily basis as you do meter maids, and the Mission will sparkle.

I get the Examiner, never read it, and sometimes wait for it to pile up before I recycle them. I know I could probably clean it up each time I get one but I NEVER READ THAT CRAPPY PAPER and don't think they should be allowed to litter our sidewalks if we didn't specifically request their "newspaper". Fine them. Same goes for restaurants that rubber band their menus to our doors. I specifically never go to these restaurants due to them being annoying. Not to mention the food probably sucks if they are so desperate they need to go door-to-door Read This Posty »

When Utility Co's upgrade and do sidewalk work - have them move utility to middle of sidewalk to allow for tree planting curbside.

Hello Mayor Newsom,
I am so glad that you have created this website! Have wanted to share ideas with you for a while. Just returned from 2 weeks in Europe and was impressed with some of the environmental things they do to conserve energy that would be great for our country and, of course, San Francisco is the city to lead the way...
1. Have lights for public areas set on motion sensors to conserve energy. This would be great for restaurants, stairwells in apartments, parking garages, bathrooms, office buildings, etc. Why do we need to have the lights on in empty office buildings Read This Posty »

Tree trimming and lowering of light height in some areas would help alleviate this safety issue.

Too many bicyclists run stop signs and stop lights. In addition, they do not yield for pedestrians and also ride their bikes on sidewalks.
SF needs bike registration, licensing and policing of some type.
Safe and responsible biking is important, but the lobby of the Bike Coalition and environmental activism for some reason has given bike riders an attitude of non-conformity and irresponsibility.
Smart solution:
-- any new bike should sold in SF has to be registered with the city.
-- any bike rider must pass a basic "rules of the road" course and get licensed
-- the city incent safe riding through "free" Read This Posty »

Train and hire people that are already in the City, and stop trying to see how much the City can pay to those brought in from elsewhere. San Francisco has just as many bright, intelligent, educated people as any other major city. I have said this time and time again; we need to accomodate our own first and maybe people won't have to leave this city.
Give these young people that want to work jobs in City hall and other city servicing areas, where eventually young people can turn their lives around and be the productive citizens that they can be. Read This Posty »

Dear Mayor,
There is absolute anarchy on our streets. Automobile drivers ignore traffic lights, block crosswalks and sidewalks, and are killing pedestrians with no consequences. Bicyclists mow down senior citizens on our sidewalks. I've not seen a single bicyclist ever ticketed for riding on the sidewalk and I have seen police officers riding on the sidewalk setting an example of lawlessness. Pedestrians don't even slow down when the little red guy starts flashing at them, blocking automobile drivers trying to complete their turns.
This anarchy leads to a total diprespect for law and order. It leads to unnecessary death and injury. Youths Read This Posty »

The amount of litter on the sidewalks and gutters is worthy of a third world country. Why not do what citizens of other countries do naturally and legislate that shopkeepers and homeowners must clean the sidewalks in front of their stores, homes? It doesn't take much for a person to take a broom and sweep the sidewalk right in front of where they live or work. If everyone pitches in, SF could look much better. And place more garbage cans on street corners (I know people steal them and they cost money). I pick up newspapers flying down the street Read This Posty »

Every day I walk from the Powell Street Muni station to my office on Sutter Street. There is trash on the sidewalks on Ellis Street, Mason Street and Sutter Street. How about if we introduced a program which would fine the owners of the businesses if they do not regularly clean up the sidewalks and street in front of their business? It's another made in New York program which we should copy.
Also, there are many of the recycling and garbage containers which have strewn all around them from people rummaging through them at night. I don't have a solution for Read This Posty »

One thing that makes this city feel hostile and unfriendly to motorcyclists is the arbitrary enforcement of sidewalk parking rules. A non-enforcement policy most of the time, that is suddenly acted upon on one street, but not the next, to the tune of $100 feels very unjust. Also, with street parking at a premium, a safely parked motorcycle on a wide sidewalk saves badly needed room for cars, and protects the motorcycle from damage. I suggest rules be adopted to allow for very specific types of sidewalk parking, in very specific places. failing that, I suggest a warning system. vehicles Read This Posty »
