Police that walk beats meet and greet local folks
September 21st, 2007 8:53 am

They are visible, watchful, and able to make friends. They reduce crime by their being on the beat. We need to do this now in San Francisco. It works in New York, Chicago and even in sprawling east Los Angeles Until crime is arrested in san francisco every other thing is way down the list in my opinion. thank you. Gangs are made up of kids are either unloved or not protected in our schools from bullies. They join for strength and protection. Only after joining do they realize the fatal challenges of gang life. It starts in homes where Read This Posty »

Homeless cleanup
September 21st, 2007 8:48 am

Actually, I just want to express appreciation for the city FINALLY taking this matter seriously, and putting the citizenry first for a change.  Please, please keep up the promised sweeps and relocations/offers of services. Thanks. Linda Read This Posty »

A New Type of Public Transit
September 20th, 2007 12:35 pm

Last night while I was watching the evening news, I was made aware of the congestion problems your city is having. Then few ideas came up in my mind that could lighten up the load. My first idea, How about a new type of public transit just for the most congested areas of your city? My idea was based from the city of Hong Kong; they have a type of public transit which is like a mini bus, which services every part of the city. These mini bus benefits over buses because they are Read This Posty »

Clean Streets
September 12th, 2007 12:14 pm

I was just in NYC and was amazed at how much cleaner their streets are than ours. As I'd walk down the street at 8am, the sidewalks had all been hosed down and seemed almost pristine. As opposed to Market Street in SF. I work at 3rd and Market, and the streets are disgustingly dirty. Obviously we have water issues they may not have, but the machines which "clean" our streets using no water do  not do the trick. It really needs to be addressed as it adversely affects how one views our remarkable city. Amy Nachman Read This Posty »

Green Newspaper Bins
September 10th, 2007 9:41 am

In areas where homeless and transient people congregate, those new green paper bins should be removed.  Example: The corner of 7th/Market (check cashing corner) there are two of these green bins. They are separated just enough for a man to stand in between them and urinate w/o being exposed. The urine cascades out in front of the BART/MUNI entry stairs. This happens every day. It smells terrible and tourist notice them doing it which makes our City look bad. Terry Clark Read This Posty »

Alternate side parking for street cleaning
August 29th, 2007 9:25 am

Poll citizens to obtain average hour of departure for work. Raise base DPT parking time to start no earlier than average. For example, my street bans parking from 6am to 8am; typically, I leave for work at 8:00am. Set street cleaning start times no earlier than, e.g., 8am (or whatever the average departure time is for citizens). Joan Carter Read This Posty »

Timed Traffic Lights on Geary
August 29th, 2007 9:24 am

I drive Geary Street every day to work and every once in a while, I see a gang of motorcycle cops pulling people over for speeding.   Usually, the motorcycle cops take over Geary street in response to a SF Chronicle report about pedestrian fatalities.  People don't know that the speed limit on Geary is 25. In fact, most people drive it like it's 35 or more.  Solution? Well, first of all, the traffic lights on Geary Street all turn green or red AT THE SAME TIME.  I think that ENCOURAGES people to speed so that they can get through as many Read This Posty »

Pedestrian Safety
August 24th, 2007 9:22 am

Yes, we all need to drive more carefully.  but we need a barrage of multi-lingual PSA's to educate / re-educate us on when to cross and when to stay on the curb.  and some very public enforcement of jay walking would help. Name Withheld Read This Posty »

Tree Trimming & Flowers
August 20th, 2007 11:18 am

Since the city doesn't seem to care about keeping the trees trimmed & the flowers on the light poles watered, you should remove the trees or just chop off all the low hanging branches up to about 9 feet so I can walk on the sidewalk without feeling like I'm running a gauntlet and take down the hanging flowers. They only really look good near city hall but around my house, they're all brown, dead and smell bad. Name Withheld Read This Posty »

Quality of Life
August 2nd, 2007 1:05 am

I think two of the problems facing this city, an inordinately high homeless population, and the quality of life criminals, can be addressed simultaneously with one humane solution: a tent city/jail. Take a nice piece of unused land, erect a tent city, put a fence around it and let the homeless live there. Naturally, many are mentally ill, so they can occupy the hospital beds as needed, but the rest of the scafflaws can just live obliviously, peacefully and happily out of doors, as they so love to do, in a tent city away from the civilized citizens Read This Posty »

Paint a motorcycle symbol on the red curb
July 23rd, 2007 9:16 am

Gavin< Everyone knows that motorcycles and scooters provide San Franciscans with a transportation option with a fraction of the traffic, parking, and carbon emissions footprint of a car.  In other words, the city could sustain 4-6 times the number of commuters, shoppers, and parkers if they were on two wheels instead of four. To maximize their inherent win-win advantages, the City should actively promote the usage of two-wheeled transport.  One of the easiest ways to do so is to paint a small motorcycle symbol on every red curb that is too small for a car, but could easily accommodate a scooter.  All Read This Posty »

Water Bottle for Ban
July 11th, 2007 5:17 pm

an Idea: What if the city designed and sold a nice water bottle (dishwasher safe, recycleable, etc. ) that residents could fill up with tap water (and ice?) instead of constantly buying small bottles of water?  If it was well-designed, with a nice San Francisco logo, with proceeds going to improving city services/cleaning up the streets (homelessness, etc.) it could become "hip" to support the city and the environment as we hydrate ourselves. This way  individuals could contribute to this environment push as well. Just an idea... Thanks, Barbara Read This Posty »

Bike Lanes and More Traffic Light Timers
June 25th, 2007 8:17 am

1)  We need separate lane just for bicycle (next to pedestrian pavement) like Europe, instead of letting the bicyclist ride through the traffic & pedestrians dangerously.   2)  We need more traffic light timers on 19th Avenue to avoid unnecessary accidents for crossroad pedestrians, esp. for the seniors and people with leg & knee problem.  Instead, we have traffic light timers on 7th Avenue and not on 9th Avenue in Sunset. Wider road or Blvd need timer as it takes longer time to cross.   Thank you! Vivienne Read This Posty »

Clean Streets
June 18th, 2007 8:52 am

Take a ride on the street sweepers in each neighborhood. Notice how most streets can not be cleaned because of parked cars in violation of posted street sweeping times. Then ask yourself why none of those cars are ticketed?  And then ask yourself why the DPW is experiencing a budget shortfall.  Street cleaning is the only effort we have to make any improvement in the litter strewn make-up of this city and the street sweepers can NOT get to the litter if cars are parked in violation and those cars park in violation, because they are not ticketed. Monthly Bulky Item Disposal
June 15th, 2007 8:15 am

Return to having a monthly large item disposal day where people can set out mattresses, couches, etc. that they no longer want and have them picked up by Sunset Scavenger.  It's a great thing to do for two reasons.  1)  When bulky items are put on the street once a month, people will scavenge the sidewalks the night before and find re-usable items that will work fine in their own homes.  This reduces how much we put into landfills and helps people with less money get by.  2)  It discourages random dumping by people who are unsure of how to Read This Posty »

Stop increasing the amount of street cleaning in the Mission
June 15th, 2007 8:14 am

The streets aren't dirty; the sidewalks are.  We can barely find a place to park as it is.  Instead, increase sidewalk cleaning.  Put as many sidewalk cleaners in the Mission on a daily basis as you do meter maids, and the Mission will sparkle.  Name Withheld Read This Posty »

More Treatment Centers
June 13th, 2007 9:47 am

In response to your letter I would like to submit the following suggestions for improvements to make San Francisco better in the future. First I want to start with the problem the drug addicts and the homeless. According to my knowledge San Francisco have not enough treatment facilities to get people off drugs and for this reason I would suggest that the City of San Francisco and  organizations working with this problem already open up an additional two or three treatment centers for people looking for help. The homeless people who are not addicted to drugs and get welfare money for Read This Posty »

Green Solutions
June 7th, 2007 9:02 am

One of our huge problems is limiting green solutions by focusing on the technology end of things.  How much energy do we use to transport water to the City that could be retrieved from the aquifer.  How much energy  do we use repairing flood damage to our streets, hills and such?  We could reduce that immediately by changing zoning regulations to legalize and even require homes and small businesses to allow run-off from roofs to reach the ground and soak into the aquifer.  It could work just like the Friend of the Urban Forest tree planting program.  Have a non Read This Posty »

New Cleanliness Rule and Pet-walking
June 5th, 2007 12:01 pm

1. Enforce new cleanliness rule. All publications over one page must have major spine staple. This gives publishers a chance to raise prices. This will stop loose papers from blowing around the streets. City to use revenues exclusively for cost of picking up loose paper. 2. Many owners of dogs and cats do not act responsibly. Prohibit pet-walking in certain area (e.g., business area) 3. Restaurants being squeezed. Transfer some of the tax load to gas stations. Jay Wilmer PAB Member Read This Posty »

Positive Ideas for San Francisco
June 4th, 2007 1:48 pm

Hello Mayor Newsom, I am so glad that you have created this website!  Have wanted to share ideas with you for a while. Just returned from 2 weeks in Europe and was impressed with some of the environmental things they do to conserve energy that would be great for our country and, of course, San Francisco is the city to lead the way... 1.  Have lights for public areas set on motion sensors to conserve energy. This would be great for restaurants, stairwells in apartments, parking garages, bathrooms, office buildings, etc. Why do we need to have the lights on in empty office buildings Read This Posty »
