I have noticed that often times when people run red lights they tend to run them because they are trying to get through before the light turns from yellow to red. I have also noticed that as one light turns red the intersecting light would turn green. If a delay were put in place so that both lights were red for perhaps 3 seconds before the one turns green this delay could perhaps save lives and prevent injuries. This would assure that when the light turns green - those who go through it will less likely be met by someone Read This Posty »

Many intersections in the city are very dangerous for pedestrians. Traffic lights should be set for four-way stops, as they are in other major cities, to allow pedestrians to safely cross. Also, more $ should be allocated for pedestrian crosswalk signals.

I drive Geary Street every day to work and every once in a while, I see a gang of motorcycle cops pulling people over for speeding. Usually, the motorcycle cops take over Geary street in response to a SF Chronicle report about pedestrian fatalities.
People don't know that the speed limit on Geary is 25. In fact, most people drive it like it's 35 or more. Solution?
Well, first of all, the traffic lights on Geary Street all turn green or red AT THE SAME TIME. I think that ENCOURAGES people to speed so that they can get through as many Read This Posty »

I have sent this to you before. I am a new yorker and know a little about traffic lights. In san francisco, there are many streets that could use coordination of the lights. When I am driving, I look around and see few cars, but yet I am stuck in traffic because the lights are not in coordination. In new york, there is much more efficient use of traffic lights and thus traffic moves much faster. If you can only do one street, let it be Columbus Avenue running from North Beach to Downtown. It is terrible. My light goes Read This Posty »

Cars emit most of their pollution when they first accelerate from a stop sign or traffic light. Once your car is going, very little pollution is being emitted. If we could time the traffic lights on more of our larger streets, we could significantly reduce our green house gas emissions without having to think about it. Also, the frustration factor would go way down for people trying to just get across town. This would reduce speeding to avoid the next light, since you'd have to drive at the required speed to avoid overrunning the next light. And it would reduce Read This Posty »

I think all traffic lights in the downtown area should be set up like some in the financial district. These lights are green for traffic going north and south, then for traffic going east and west, and then for pedestrians only. This would help traffic move through town better and make the intersections safer for pedestrians. As it is now, when a light turns green, pedestrian enter crosswalks and cars that want to make right turns have to wait. This does not allow cars in the right lanes to move forward, and drivers often swerve quickly into the left lanes Read This Posty »

4th & Mission has a lot of pedestrian traffic, yet the traffic signals do not offer an all-way-walk. There are usually a number of cars waiting to turn right from Mission onto 4th St, and many people "in the know" resort to doing an illegal right turn around the other cars turning right, because otherwise one green might only allow a few cars to turn right.
The funny thing is that the next two intersections down 4th, at Howard and Folsom streets, both have all-way-walk cycles in their signals, even though they have typically much lower pedestrian loads. (Although at Howard Read This Posty »

One would think that in a technologically advanced city there would not be situations where cars sit idly behind a red light when no traffic is coming from the other directions.
San Fran needs smarter traffic lights to help traffic flow faster during non peak times...
