Converting street lights and all traffic signals
January 9th, 2008 11:41 am

Many cities are converting all street lights and traffic signals to "Green living" LED's or energy saving light systems. It's green, the right thing to do, and in long run, saves the city money.   Peter Read This Post »

Traffic light delays
October 11th, 2007 3:47 pm

I have noticed that often times when people run red lights they tend to run them because they are trying to get through before the light turns from yellow to red.  I have also noticed that as one light turns red the intersecting light would turn green.  If a delay were put in place so that both lights were red for perhaps 3 seconds before the one turns green this delay could perhaps save lives and prevent injuries. This would assure that when the light turns green - those who go through it will less likely be met by someone Read This Post »

Make Carpooling Mandatory
October 1st, 2007 8:35 am

Instead of charging a toll on some of the busier downtown streets, make carpooling (2 or more) mandatory. There are thousands of single person cars driving downtown, and you mean to tell me none of them are going to the same place,or at least walking distance of each other? This should, in theory cut downtown traffic by 50%. a substantial fine should be enforced. John David Read This Post »

A New Type of Public Transit
September 20th, 2007 12:35 pm

Last night while I was watching the evening news, I was made aware of the congestion problems your city is having. Then few ideas came up in my mind that could lighten up the load. My first idea, How about a new type of public transit just for the most congested areas of your city? My idea was based from the city of Hong Kong; they have a type of public transit which is like a mini bus, which services every part of the city. These mini bus benefits over buses because they are Read This Post »

Traffic Infractions
August 8th, 2007 3:03 pm

Why not deputize some new officers strictly for traffic enforcement and have them routinely patrol different areas for pesky traffic infractions, e.g., sidewalk parking, driveways, over-the-curb parking, etc. I guess they couldn't stop autos for moving violations, but it sure would be nice to see more of that kind of enforcement. The city coffers would be overflowing (and probably cover the cost plus some). Not a day goes by that someone doesn't try to run me over, either running a red light, or not stopping at a turn when I'm ready to cross. (I have to pay Read This Post »

Traffic Congestion
August 6th, 2007 3:01 pm

Better enforcement of "no parking" in Pine Street and Bush Street traffic lanes and ticketing double parkers in neighborhood and Downtown commercial areas. Traffic to and from Downtown from the Western areas of SF can be dramatically improved if double parking during rush hour is eliminated and if people do not park in traffic lanes before the allowed time. For example, on Pine Street outbound, parking is not allowed until 7 pm. People regularly begin parking in the traffic lanes just after 6 pm because they know that the zones are not enforced. Traffic backs up as a result. Read This Post »

Traffic - I80 East/101N
June 20th, 2007 8:09 am

I have a solution (ok not solution, but something that will help the problem) for the traffic slowdown that occurs daily on the 101 N approach to the 101N/I80East intersection.  The first set of signs that alert drivers to the intersection of these two highways and the approach of the bay bridge need to be switched around/combined.  People FREAK out (translation: slow down) when they read the signs at this point on 101 N that seem to say you only have access to the Bay bridge from one lane, the second from the left center divide), and everyone tries to Read This Post »

Traffic Congestion
June 13th, 2007 9:48 am

Congestion pricing on bridge tolls--no additional administrative overhead since the infrastructure is already in place. NYC is considering such a move, and London has already done it. The bridges would be much smaller scale, but so easy to do! Ben Elchenberg Read This Post »

Revenue from Unenforced Law
June 1st, 2007 9:13 am

The MTA needs to start enforcing SEC. 28.1 of the traffic code;  "It shall be unlawful for any person to operate a vehicle with gross weight in excess of 6,000 pounds upon the streets designated in Sections 28.1.1 et seq. of this Code."   The fine per violation is set at $100.  This could be enforced by cross referencing the VIN with the GVW if the vehicle receives a ticket. Or MTA enforcement could start actively looking for vehicles that are over the weight limit. Shaun Hughes Read This Post »

Oak Street traffic backup at Octavia
June 1st, 2007 9:05 am

Make the right-most lane on Oak Street before Octavia PERMANENTLY no-parking.  A permanent right-turn lane.  They did a beautiful job implementing Octavia Blvd as an alternative to the ugly Central Fwy onramp, but the traffic down Oak now stops as people try to merge right at the last moment.  This is dangerous and unnecessary.  Put in a SUFFICIENT and permanent right-turn lane(s) solution.  Thanks. Traffic Lights
June 1st, 2007 9:03 am

I have sent this to you before.  I am a new yorker and know a little about traffic lights.  In san francisco, there are many streets that could use coordination of the lights.  When I am driving, I look around and see few cars, but yet I am stuck in traffic because the lights are not in coordination.  In new york, there is much more efficient use of traffic lights and thus traffic moves much faster.  If you can only do one street, let it be Columbus Avenue running from North Beach to Downtown.  It is terrible.  My light goes Read This Post »

Traffic & Road Rage
June 1st, 2007 8:46 am

Ban left hand turns from Divisadero and Van Vess unless there is a turn lane ... would speed traffic and keep people from getting VERY annoyed ___ Decrease the labor intensive work of getting quarters in meters and ticket double parkers ... in any given day (try saturday) hit the shopping area of chestnut street, the presidio heights and fillmore st... suv's doubleparked and empty while cel phone yakkers get a double latte at starbucks ... not only would this bring is A LOT of revenue, it would also decrease road rage ... and enable buses to get by. Traffic Safety
May 28th, 2007 2:49 pm

Parking fine fees have been increased to help off-set MUNI budget shortages. Why not increase moving violation fees to help increase traffic and, more importantly, pedestrian safety. As Susan Leal once said, "it is anarchy on our streets." And the situation has only gotten worse since her stance led to an increase in the number of traffic cameras. Although never happy about advocating for anything Big-Brother like, if drivers (and motorcyclists and bikers) will not comport themselves in a safe and lega manner, then the City has an obligation to intervene. Higher fines, more traffic cameras, increase police presence, and Read This Post »

Shopping Streets
May 21st, 2007 8:42 am

Having been to many European cities like Barcelona, Florence, and Vienna, I have had the opportunity to enjoy a very European experience.  The idea of a street without cars, or very limited cars.  I know that we are a much more car oriented society, but I would like to think that we could create some really great small areas (one or two blocks long each) of the city where we could promote outdoor cafes, small walking parks, kiosks for various things, small markets, etc.  I know the city retailers would freak out, but so did all those European store owners Read This Post »

Time the Traffic Lights
May 21st, 2007 8:36 am

Cars emit most of their pollution when they first accelerate from a stop sign or traffic light.  Once your car is going, very little pollution is being emitted.  If we could time the traffic lights on more of our larger streets, we could significantly reduce our green house gas emissions without having to think about it.  Also, the frustration factor would go way down for people trying to just get across town.  This would reduce speeding to avoid the next light, since you'd have to drive at the required speed to avoid overrunning the next light. And it would reduce Read This Post »

Trucks/Traffic
May 10th, 2007 2:35 pm

As more people purchase from online retail, more delivery trucks will clog our streets making it impossible for traffic to flow normally. Road rage will surely follow and so will horn blowing. I suggest that truck owners be fined heavily if they don't pull into the available "deliveries only" parking spaces...and that they're license be suspended until they pay their fines. The worst offenders are FEDX and UPS but certainly the delivery trucks along the commercial areas like 16th St - Mission Street etc. Name Withheld Read This Post »

Critical Mass
May 8th, 2007 3:40 pm

The time was up for these thugs long ago.  They should get permits like every other group in the city and should obey all traffic laws.  If not they should be arrested.  The time has long passed to allow a group of thugs to take over the city once a month. Name Withheld Read This Post »
