I would like to suggest the idea of a "driving buddy" program. The program would consist of senior citizens whom are physically unable to drive, yet still own cars and have the necessity of transport on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. Said seniors would partner, or "buddy" up with another local licensed driver whom also has a like need of transportation. The buddy system would provide those who need to drive about town, but are physically unable too and those who are physically able to drive however lack the vehicle in which to drive. Many of the great cities in the world have dedicated and isolated bicycle lanes. These provide space for bicycles, making this entirely sustainable and pollution free transportation option safer and more appealing to a broader array of residents. My idea may at first sound radical and expensive, especially to those accustomed to automobiles as a fact of life. But cars are killing pedestrian and cyclists in our city, and polluting our air. The mayor (and other prominent public officials) should ride a bicycle to work and engagements for several weeks and join the SF cycling community in a critical mass ride --- if we are serious about making SF a livable city, public officials should encourage alternative means of transportation and take the time to see the streets from a bicyclist's perspective.
