I live in an area with trash pick-ups scheduled at 9 or 10pm in one direction, and as early as 6am at the other end of the block. Part of the noise (besides the beeping and banging) is the loud noise of the metal lids on the dumpsters. It seems an obvious solution would be some sort of plastic or rubber top that would not bang -- and would also be much easier for the people dealing with them. Seems simple, but I understand there is some sort of ordinance requiring metal lids -- is that true?

That the restaurants were to be made responsible for the trash containers within a block or two of their establishment. You said a good portion of the trash is fast food in origin they have trash at the free standing sites. Some additional distance would be helpful, yes?

Please! Provide several well-marked recycling bins for plastic water bottles at ALL city events. I was dismayed at your recent town hall meeting at Excelsior Boys & Girls Club- and at other recent city-sponsored events- to see all the water bottles and soda cans going into the trash. It's so simple, Mayor! Aren't we supposed to be a GREEN city?

Problem: There is alot of garbage in the park, alongside walking trails, etc. and alot of it is generated by the homeless that live in the park.
Solution: Offer a paid garbage pick-up program to people much like the 5 cent can redemption program. Give people garbage bags and based on weight, give them an amt of money for the pick-up. You will find that the ability to make some money will motivate alot of people to start picking up trash--much like the way I see people collecting disgarded soda cans.

Add more trash cans in muni/bart stations and on corners. This city is dirtier than NYC!

The amount of litter on the sidewalks and gutters is worthy of a third world country. Why not do what citizens of other countries do naturally and legislate that shopkeepers and homeowners must clean the sidewalks in front of their stores, homes? It doesn't take much for a person to take a broom and sweep the sidewalk right in front of where they live or work. If everyone pitches in, SF could look much better. And place more garbage cans on street corners (I know people steal them and they cost money). I pick up newspapers flying down the street Read This Posty »

Every day I walk from the Powell Street Muni station to my office on Sutter Street. There is trash on the sidewalks on Ellis Street, Mason Street and Sutter Street. How about if we introduced a program which would fine the owners of the businesses if they do not regularly clean up the sidewalks and street in front of their business? It's another made in New York program which we should copy.
Also, there are many of the recycling and garbage containers which have strewn all around them from people rummaging through them at night. I don't have a solution for Read This Posty »

Dear Mr. Newsom,
As people come over the Bay Bridge they see the wonderful views and must think WOW, what a GREAT city. Then they get off at 5th Street and Harrison and reality sets in. They see 1-3 people begging at this corner. They see trash cans that have ravaged and their contents dumped by scavengers. Is this the first real impression we want to give visitors?
Much has been done at this corner. The street sweepers come every night and clean one side and then the other Read This Posty »

The amount of trash on the streets of San Francisco is ridiculous. As a city, we should be ashamed. I have lived in several cities in the US and no city's waste pick up is sloppier than it is here. The solution to this? More public garbage cans. More recycling bins for the public. And the frequency that these get emptied needs to increase. Garbage spews out of the sides of the cans. Can we enforce harder rules and regulations on our Garbage men/women that they actually have to gather all the trash and can't assume it will be picked Read This Posty »

More Trash bins.
Eliminate the free newspaper machines which end up all over the street.
Littering is a fine isn't it? Let's post no littering signs in spanish/english with the dollar amount.
How about some DPW workers walking beats in the mission ginving out tickets and pay them a commission for every ticket they write. Something must be done about the trash. It is a disgrace in a wonderful neighborhood. Kudos on the "NO" plastic grocery bags. That will be a help.

I would like to see our city adopt a Clean Up campaign for litter that rivals the Keep American Beautiful...those ads in the early 60's showing the Native American on a horse with a tear in his eye. This helped shape the attitudes of a whole generation about litter. Before that time people would think nothing of throwing things out of car windows as they drove along the road. WE CAN CHANGE PEOPLE'S BEHAVIOR, BUT WE NEED A PLAN.
Here is my idea:
1. Do a major ad campaign, schools and all. to educate people about the litter laws. Film PSA's Read This Posty »
