Recycling Bins
November 19th, 2007 11:04 am

Hello Mayor Newsom, Have you ever considered having TSA style locks placed on the blue recycling bins in San Francisco? I think this would help a lot with the homeless problem (particularly at the recycling center in GG park) and also help to protect people from identity theft. The locks could have two keys one for the bin user and another general key for the waste management workers. The money the city saves not having to pay for bottles & cans that are stolen out of recycling bins would probably pay for the locks and even generate more revenue for Read This Posty »

Plastic dumper lids
October 29th, 2007 12:05 pm

I live in an area with trash pick-ups scheduled at 9 or 10pm in one direction, and as early as 6am at the other end of the block. Part of the noise (besides the beeping and banging) is the loud noise of the metal lids on the dumpsters. It seems an obvious solution would be some sort of plastic or rubber top that would not bang -- and would also be much easier for the people dealing with them.  Seems simple, but I understand there is some sort of ordinance requiring metal lids -- is that true? Make Homeless Campgrounds
October 22nd, 2007 9:20 am

According to the SF Chronicle, we are "down to 280 encampments..." in Golden Gate Park.   Hello?  Shouldn't this be ZERO?  Get out a fire tanker truck and go in and hose out each encampment.  I don't care if they think of themselves as "harmless eccentrics," there is nothing harmless about living in a camper, RV, car, tent or tarp unless you are in a campground and San Francisco's parks are NOT campgrounds.  Maybe it's time to forget the homeless "shelters" and go outside the city and build a "homeless campground."  Get GGNRA to donate some land, add porta potties, install Read This Posty »

A Walk In The Park
October 12th, 2007 9:37 am

If everyone who values fitness - and everyone with membership to a gym - took one vegetable bag from home, used it inside out like a rubber glove, and "touched their toes" just one more time to pick up a piece of trash or two, and dropped it in the very next trash bin they see, they'd soon realize they feel much greater happiness.  It's easy as a walk in the park.  Name Withheld Read This Posty »

Make Merchants Keep Sidewalks Clean

Roll Back the Dumpsters
October 3rd, 2007 10:50 am

Many mornings as I commute to work I will find large rolling garbage bins blocking the left lane of O'Farrell between Van Ness and Polk.  The garbage men should roll these dumpsters back onto the sidewalk so that traffic does not have to clear out of that lane. Jason Jungreis Read This Posty »

Make the Homeless Work
September 21st, 2007 8:43 am

If there were a program where homeless people were required to perform some sort task (trash collection in parks, painting over graffiti) for a small stipend I can guarantee you that the city would be cleaner and the majority of the homeless would go elsewhere. Name Withheld Read This Posty »

Trash in the Bay
September 12th, 2007 12:19 pm

I am 11 years old.  This was my homework. Summary: We do not realize how much trash we have put in the bay over the last 15 years.  Last year, the Save The Bay Organization picked up a ton of trash.  10,000 pounds.  In the process they have found washers and dryers, tires, oil cans, and plastic bags.  researchers say in 2020 there will be 8.1 million people in the bay area.  8.1 million more pieces of trash to pickup.  Soon they will have us coming to local beaches on Saturday!  to pickup trash.  iiiiiccckkkk. Opinion:  My opinion is to naturally agree Read This Posty »

Green Newspaper Bins
September 10th, 2007 9:41 am

In areas where homeless and transient people congregate, those new green paper bins should be removed.  Example: The corner of 7th/Market (check cashing corner) there are two of these green bins. They are separated just enough for a man to stand in between them and urinate w/o being exposed. The urine cascades out in front of the BART/MUNI entry stairs. This happens every day. It smells terrible and tourist notice them doing it which makes our City look bad. Terry Clark Read This Posty »

Trash Cans Outside Restaurants
June 22nd, 2007 12:04 pm

That the restaurants were to be made responsible for the trash containers within a block or two of their establishment. You said a good portion of the trash is fast food in origin they have trash at the free standing sites. Some additional distance would be helpful, yes? Alan Carson Read This Posty »

Clean Streets
June 18th, 2007 8:52 am

Take a ride on the street sweepers in each neighborhood. Notice how most streets can not be cleaned because of parked cars in violation of posted street sweeping times. Then ask yourself why none of those cars are ticketed?  And then ask yourself why the DPW is experiencing a budget shortfall.  Street cleaning is the only effort we have to make any improvement in the litter strewn make-up of this city and the street sweepers can NOT get to the litter if cars are parked in violation and those cars park in violation, because they are not ticketed. Monthly Bulky Item Disposal
June 15th, 2007 8:15 am

Return to having a monthly large item disposal day where people can set out mattresses, couches, etc. that they no longer want and have them picked up by Sunset Scavenger.  It's a great thing to do for two reasons.  1)  When bulky items are put on the street once a month, people will scavenge the sidewalks the night before and find re-usable items that will work fine in their own homes.  This reduces how much we put into landfills and helps people with less money get by.  2)  It discourages random dumping by people who are unsure of how to Read This Posty »

Stop increasing the amount of street cleaning in the Mission
June 15th, 2007 8:14 am

The streets aren't dirty; the sidewalks are.  We can barely find a place to park as it is.  Instead, increase sidewalk cleaning.  Put as many sidewalk cleaners in the Mission on a daily basis as you do meter maids, and the Mission will sparkle.  Name Withheld Read This Posty »

Ban free newspapers from being left at doorstops
June 5th, 2007 3:30 pm

I get the Examiner, never read it, and sometimes wait for it to pile up before I recycle them.  I know I could probably clean it up each time I get one but I NEVER READ THAT CRAPPY PAPER and don't think they should be allowed to litter our sidewalks if we didn't specifically request their "newspaper".  Fine them.  Same goes for restaurants that rubber band their menus to our doors.  I specifically never go to these restaurants due to them being annoying.  Not to mention the food probably sucks if they are so desperate they need to go door-to-door Read This Posty »

Positive Ideas for San Francisco
June 4th, 2007 1:48 pm

Hello Mayor Newsom, I am so glad that you have created this website!  Have wanted to share ideas with you for a while. Just returned from 2 weeks in Europe and was impressed with some of the environmental things they do to conserve energy that would be great for our country and, of course, San Francisco is the city to lead the way... 1.  Have lights for public areas set on motion sensors to conserve energy. This would be great for restaurants, stairwells in apartments, parking garages, bathrooms, office buildings, etc. Why do we need to have the lights on in empty office buildings Read This Posty »

Motorcycle Noise
June 4th, 2007 9:59 am

When a police officer hears an especially loud motorcycle pass by, ticket it.  Simple, affordable, and legal.  No new laws, no new staff, just do the job. MUNI filth.  When cutting the budget to MUNI perhaps cut something other than the cleaning staff.  BART is right up there with Muni in cutting the cleaning staff while so how managing staff raises for the top administrators.  I want to see them on the bus.  How about signs on the bus that suggest that the bus is not for carrying on conversations on cell phones.  People want a WiFi city but people don't Read This Posty »
