Thank goodness Earthlink backed out of the deal. This is a golden opportunity to move on to more pressing matters. "Free" WiFi was never, of course, going to be free -- there would be substantial disruptive costs to building this system and granting a quasi-monopoly to Google/Earthlink that would have hurt SF in the short and long term. And SF running the system itself is even worse! It takes courage and leadership to change course when it's called for. This is one of those times. Forget "Free" WiFi and move on!

Dear Mayor Newsom
I suggest your I T origination look into Wi-Max vs Wi-Fi. A leap frog in technology would give the city a real advantage.

I don't care if it is with Earthlink or city-owned. It is embarrassing that a hi-tech city lacks what others have. Thank you.

1. If you can't get the Supervisors to approve a city-wide Deal with Google for free WiFi, how about proposing a pilot program to bring in to the Bayview NOW! Give them a year or two to perform, and then go for a city-wide deal.
2. No one would live in public housing given a chance. They breed gangs and violence. Do not re-build public housing. Better to tear them down, build individual houses, and give them away to the occupants. At least this would give them the opportunity to share in the American Dream.
3. Please go after owners of houses Read This Posty »

So while people are waiting to be called for jury duty they have to pay to access the internet. There's already a system in place which we could pay for at city hall) -- shouldn't we have free access in exchange for our service?

When a police officer hears an especially loud motorcycle pass by, ticket it. Simple, affordable, and legal. No new laws, no new staff, just do the job.
MUNI filth. When cutting the budget to MUNI perhaps cut something other than the cleaning staff. BART is right up there with Muni in cutting the cleaning staff while so how managing staff raises for the top administrators. I want to see them on the bus.
How about signs on the bus that suggest that the bus is not for carrying on conversations on cell phones.

I really do not like being petty or mean or finding fault with politicians. I try to look for the good in everyone. The Board of Supervisors, particularly Mr. Chris Daly, are starting to get on my nerves. I am not in the mood today after seeing numerous articles and his reaction to the Mayor's plan for free Wifi, to hold my peace any longer.
Our Mayor should not have to answer to that ridiculous man, Chris Daly...the man is a waste of time for the taxpayers...he only appears to spend his time trashing the Mayor. Instead citizens should hold Read This Posty »

I've always loved the houseboats in Sausalito. Sure there's some in Mission Bay, but they seem almost extinct. Why not build more barges, have the city create (and lease) the infrastructure underneath, and citizens buy the living quarters - this would make the housing much more reasonable. Have it be 50% populated by teachers, police, firefighters, nurses and civil servants, 25% low income, 25% artsy SOMA types. Recycle human waste into community vegetable gardens ala Findhorn. Have solar power and wifi. Have community spaces for childcare and playground, larger gatherings than fit in a condo space, built in and around Read This Posty »

Why charge jurors for access to DSL? it's already there and if you're thinking about providing to the city don't you think it makes sense to allow jurors who are waiting in the jury room to have free access?

Create city solar power. City installs and owns the panels on residential houses, installs meter in garage next to meter from PG&E, charges a percentage less than going rate from PG&E. Use WIFI to read meters so little manual work. Create revenue stream for city, buy/install in bulk so save on costs of systems, get fed and state incentive money, and reduce green house gas, etc. I'm not a nutcase bay-guardian anti-PG&E type either, just thought this would be a cool way to get more solar installed that is feasible economically for people who can't afford it. City owned solar Read This Posty »
