Many intersections in the city are very dangerous for pedestrians. Traffic lights should be set for four-way stops, as they are in other major cities, to allow pedestrians to safely cross. Also, more $ should be allocated for pedestrian crosswalk signals.

It contributes to stress and negatively impacts quality of life in a city with tightly built neighborhoods. I was very unpleasantly surprised that construction is allowed to go on until 8pm at night all over the city (no permit required), including residential neighborhoods.   I experienced this unpleasant fact in the Mission when Fire Station #7  decided to saw and hammer all night building a building in their lot.  I've lived in other cities and most construction was not allowed in residential neighborhoods (except in emergency) after 6pm.  The term "keeping the peace" could be loosely applied here.

Make all databases of Health care universal for all health care providers to react on them easily and efficiently. Just the act of reducing paperwork and increasing efficiency would be helpful. Two providers from different hospitals or clinics can exchange information easily for the same patient. When you issue those "no parking" signs for construction on residential streets 0 the ones that last for weeks or months, a great idea would be to write the month out, instead of a number. Like 2/12/07 would be Oct. 12, 07. So many people take a marker and change 2 to 12 or 7 to 17 and get another few months or ten days out of their permit. And do we take the risk and park there? Housing First is a great initiative to get homeless people off the streets. It seems to me, however, that a more comprehensive plan involving housing AND employment, with the transition to permanent employment possible. To start, the city clearly has a need for public works employees to clean, paint, rebuild, repair, etc., and it seems like these manual labor type jobs would be a great fit in such a program.

A friend of ours was visiting San Francisco yesterday from AZ, and he said "San Francisco's Homeless population is out-of-control. Not to be in-humane, but there are pan-handlers and drugged out homeless people everywhere in SF- you folks should do something." I told him about the progress being made with Homeless Connect.

While in Europe this summer I noticed something that seemed like a great idea, and wondered why it couldn't happen in the US. At all of the public transportation stations, the escalators ran on sensors--so unless a person approached the escalator to use it, it was not running (presumably to save energy and money). Can the city of SF look into that to save money and energy too? Seems like it would be worth the trouble.

Many mornings as I commute to work I will find large rolling garbage bins blocking the left lane of O'Farrell between Van Ness and Polk.  The garbage men should roll these dumpsters back onto the sidewalk so that traffic does not have to clear out of that lane.

Hybrids for city only since they can really go any faster than 40 mile/hour anyway.  Regular cars for airport transfer since they need a big trunk and hybrids cars are too small for suitcases. Most of the time you need to call a cab to go to the airport so it can be scheduled in advance and we won't have these huge cars polluting are streets.

Concerning Chronicle article "S.F. Boom Boosts Mayor". We expect Mayor Newsom and Board of Supervisors to create a better San Francisco. Though they have an effect, to actually transform San Francisco into the place we say we yearn for, each San Franciscan must change. Instead of charging a toll on some of the busier downtown streets, make carpooling (2 or more) mandatory. There are thousands of single person cars driving downtown,and you mean to tell me none of them are going to the same place,or at least walking distance of each other? This should, in theory cut downtown traffic by 50%. a substantial fine should be enforced.

As a suggestion, when the troops return home from Iraq, the City of San Francisco should celebrate all troops by having a celebration (of some sort) for the troops. I think the  solution is to set up more surveillance cameras in the high crime areas and have the police officers view and monitor the surveillance cameras like Chicago PD does.
