Mayor Newsom announced today that the State of California has put $73 million into SF’s Health Access Plan. The HAP is the linchpin of the city’s efforts to provide universal health care to its residents. Supervisor Tom Ammiano said it best: "the state has put their money where their mouth is."
The federal government has failed for years to get any kind of solution to our health care crisis. Gavin Newsom has said, you can complain about it, or you can do something about it. We’re doing something about it.
The idea for universal health care in the city was first raised by Newsom in his 2005 State of the City address.
This is acting locally.

with all the injured and/or debilitated troops, universal health care is a must for the future of america in general - we must divert our financial resources from supporting destruction - to supporting protection…

While I’m convinced that the best, most efficient, most equitable and most suitable long-term strategy is a national health plan offering universal coverage, I fully support state and local health coverage initiatives such as the San Francisco Plan. I’m glad that the state is supporting this idea and that the California officials can get a state level initiative passed.

While I 100% support universal health care, the City of San Francisco is going about it in exactly the wrong way. How is it fair to require that a small percentage of the population arbitrarily provide health care for the whole? The way the system is set up, a restaurant employing 25 people would give nearly 50% of their profits up to health care - hardly a winning proposition. The solution to health care is a single payer system, not penalizing entrepreneurs who bring diversity of goods and services to our city.
