A lot has been made over the past six months or so about whether or not the 49ers will stay in San Francisco. The insiders at City Hall and in the media are predictably obsessed with who is up or down politically as a result of the situation.
It is a good thing that the city and the 49ers continue to talk and work on things together, because at the end of the day the Mayor, and many others, would like to see the team stay here.
Throughout the whole process, Gavin Newsom has been clear: He wants the team to stay in San Francisco, and he wants them to be part of the plan to fulfill the promise (made even before Newsom became Mayor) to revitalize the Southeastern quadrant of the city. While news of the stadium gets the most attention, the plan to invigorate Hunter’s Point and Candlestick Point is what really drives the effort.
We have an historic opportunity to do what city leaders have been talking about for decades.
Forty years ago, Robert Kennedy, Jr. came to San Francisco and gave a speech about the challenges facing neighborhoods like Hunter’s Point. Gavin Newsom has plans to do something about it.

I like the stadium idea, but it needs to be closer to the 3rd St. Light rail and Caltrain, and have much less parking! The 49er’s Stadium has done well with very limited parking. Parking lots are ugly. People should be encouraged to take transit and picnic in the surrounding park rather than having tailgate parties where they consume mass quantities of alcohol, then get right on the freeway.

I hope the 49ers will stay. I would agree that it would be better if the stadium could be closer to the T-Third line and Caltrain, just like AT&T Park is. As Rob Begroff states above, “People should be encouraged to take transit . . .” Whatever happens, though, that Bayview/Hunter’s Point area still has to be fixed up.

I don’t live in CA and I’m not a 49ers fan (I’m a Dallas Cowboys fan) but I believe that there is great NFL history in SF with the 49ers and they must stay there!! I know that times and circumstances change and economics and politics are also factors but still please stay in SF!
