Supervisor Chris Daly has never recognized the boundaries of civility in politics. There’s not enough space on this page to recount all the tantrums, boorish outbursts and political shenanigans that make the word "progressive" a joke when applied to him. His November election-night party — with him and supporters chortling on stage as his wife led profane chants against his adversaries — was a classic show of gracelessness in victory. He has been known to respond to the public’s e-mail inquiries with stinging insults.
But even by his own low standards of behavior, Daly’s attempt to smear Mayor Gavin Newsom by referring to "allegations of (Newsom’s) own cocaine use" in the context of a budget discussion about funding levels for an outpatient treatment program was beyond outrageous. Daly offered not a shred of evidence that he had any basis to raise such a rumor. Newsom was put in the untenable position of having to deny a negative. Still, he did so, in emphatic and convincing fashion at a news conference Wednesday.
There’s been a lot of sanctimonious talk among the supervisors lately about defending the integrity of the board in light of the scandal of Ed Jew’s residency. The board’s stature is also tarnished when slander infects its deliberations. Supervisors need to make a statement that slime is not an acceptable tactic at City Hall.
Censure him.

CHRIS DALY IS A PUNK! - www.likroper.com

I’m grateful that PESKIN, not Daly, is the Supervisor for my district. Otherwise, I’d be so embarrassed! And Daly’s the same age as I am. That proves that age and maturity are not correlative. I’ve seen children act with more class and grace.

Although I don’t always agree with Supervisor Daly, I do admire him for bringing the budget to the forefront of public attention, and made the public aware that the budget is not as simple as the mayor would have us think. Many of the programs that he cut, on the surface look one way, but if you look into them, they have declined greatly over the years (like the Park Patrol. We’re paying the same now for 4 officers that we were for 17 a few years back. Where’s the money??)
And the police: Where’s the accountability? Murder rates climbing, the police are failing, why throw more money at the same broken machine?
Of course the Mayor wants a pork-filled feel-good budget, whether it improves the city or not. Remember, this is the Mayor who tried to DECREASE foot patrols in our most crime-plagued neighborhoods.
Anyone who comes within a few hundred feet of City Hall, or the people who work there, has heard of the cocaine rumors about the Mayor many times before. Is it true? Don’t expect honest from this mayor, or his “people.”
I think it’s good that Daly pointed out that while the Mayor was getting cadillac rehab (if he’s going at all), he’s cutting the budget for the neediest of addicts seeking to get help.
And now the Mayor is sucking up to the police by offering them a fat raise on the eve of the election season, but is not giving them any incentives for living in the city. Wonder why there’s no crime in Novato? Because thats where all the cops live!
Just shovelling $$ at a problem doesn’t fix it.

loharob… we don’t need a ranting child to point out every flaw in the mayor’s budget. Do you actually condone Daly’s Childish behavior and personal attacks? Don’t you think SF citizens would be better served to have someone who could get things done with some sense of decorum?
