Mayor Newsom likes to talk about how his uncle was a union member in the SF Fire Department service decades ago. He likes to talk about how he appreciates how labor has rallied around universal health care, better wages for school employees, fair wages for IHSS workers and how we need to honor the people who make this City run.
Union members showed their colors and numbers last Thursday when over 300 union workers from more than 30 individual unions came together to show their support for Mayor Newsom’s re-election.
The event was held at AT&T Park and it was standing room only. Union members snacked on Giants dogs while they waited for the Mayor and the room erupted when Local 798 President John Hanley began the program.

First to speak was SF Labor Council Vice President Conny Ford. Ford described Mayor Newsom as a friend and ally of the worker in San Francisco, and listed numerous examples of his commitment to fairness and justice for working families.

Hanley then introduced Executive Director of the SF Building and Construction Trades Council who confessed that in the last election he was for another candidate, which drew good natured boos that turned into cheers when he announced that he had "seen the light."
The final speaker before Newsom was Oscar de la Torre the head of the Laborers Local 261, which had over 60 members present wearing bright orange t-shirts emblazoned with "Laborers" and "Newsom 07."

The event was capped with Newsom sticking around to take photos and shake hands with all the participants. It was a great show of support from the rank and file of San Francisco’s labor community.
