The Bush Administration has turned its back on the most vulnerable Americans. Since 2001 more than one billion dollars has been cut from the federal public housing budget in order to pay for President Bush’s War in Iraq. This year only 76 percent of the actual need of housing authorities nationwide will be met.
San Francisco has been one of the cities hardest hit by this chronic underfunding. The President’s shortsighted policies has put the future of public housing in San Francisco and the nation at risk.
Millions have been slashed from the San Francisco Housing Authority under Bush’s tenure. Over the past five years half of its staff — 250 employees have had to be let go. And many people in our city have suffered because of these cuts — buildings have fallen into disrepair, while others that need to be replaced haven’t been. Social services, job training and education programs have also had to be scaled back.
While the federal government has a moral responsibility to provide more money for public housing, San Francisco is taking an unprecedented step to restore public housing in our city. With the overwhelming support of the Board of Supervisors, Mayor Newsom is launching Hope SF, the nation’s most innovative plan to revitalize public housing.
The Mayor’s $95 million strategy will support the rebuilding of public housing in a mixed-income context. Hope SF will redevelop 700-900 severely distressed public housing units, encourage the development of another 300 affordable units and 700-900 new market rate homes.
