Mayor Gavin Newsom was sworn in for a second term Tuesday, promising to make San Francisco a greener city and a national leader in health care reform while praising "San Francisco values" like support for same-sex marriage and protections for undocumented immigrants. Newsom's father, retired Judge William Newsom, administered the oath of office using a family Bible under City Hall's palatial dome in a ceremony that organizers billed as low-key. The mayor was sworn in alongside his sister Hillary Newsom Callan, her two young daughters and his new fiancee, Jennifer Siebel, to whom Newsom referred in his inaugural speech as "the love of my life."

New studies show that California students are turning their back on higher education at an alarming rate. We rank 40th in the United States when it comes to the number of high school students entering college. Now more then ever we need to invest in our future to maintain a competitive workforce. Today, Mayor Gavin Newsom, in collaboration with the San Francisco Unified School District and San Francisco State University, took a major step toward reversing this trend by announcing S.F. Promise. This visionary program guarantees acceptance at S.F. State for each eligible 6th grader who completes a seven year college prep course, starting in the 2008-2009 school year.

The long, winding and sadly, whinging road toward bringing free citywide wireless to San Francisco may finally be approaching the finish line this week. We'd like to applaud Supervisor Aaron Peskin for being one of the few board members to show some actual leadership. He has countered the mayor's agreement with providers Google and EarthLink with a compromise that deserves support from all parties.

We want to thank the hundreds of you who came out on very short notice to ask the Board of Supervisors to approve
free WiFi for San Francisco. It was an awesome display of the need and support for free Internet access for all San Franciscans. San Franciscans who cannot afford Internet access, small business owners, community leaders and others descended on City Hall on Monday to plead their case for free WiFi.
Now more than ever we have to keep the pressure on the Board of Supervisors, demanding that they listen to the people they represent and approve free WiFi for all San Franciscans on July 11th.

Thousands of you have signed our
petition in support of
free WiFi for San Francisco and now more than ever, we need your help to make this ambitious proposal a reality. We have just learned that the Board of Supervisors, led by Chris Daly, has called a
special committee hearing for Monday (May 14th) at 2PM where they may try to kill the free WiFi plan for San Francisco, with little public notice. We are asking you to Act Locally today.
Call or Email your supervisor. Better yet - join us this Monday for a rally on the steps of City Hall at 1PM on the Dr. Carlton Goodlett Place side. Then come testify at the 2PM WiFi hearing.
