In the heat of the last campaign for Mayor, Michael Moore didn’t support Gavin Newsom.
Since then, Mayor Newsom has led San Francisco to become one of the greenest cities in the world and has stood up for same sex marriage when most other politicians ran the other way. And he, along with Supervisor Tom Ammiano and our partners in labor and the health care community are delivering universal health care for every San Franciscan.
Health care was the topic of discussion Wednesday. Moore’s new film, SiCKO chronicles the tragic shortcomings of the American health care system in an incredibly powerful and unexpectedly non-partisan way.
Mayor Newsom and Moore met Wednesday for a press roundtable to discuss the state of heath care in America. According to the San Francisco Examiner, Mayor Newsom said that Moore is a man of “courage and character.”
“No one does it better than Michael Moore,” Newsom said. “Love him or hate him, no one does it better in making an argument.”
In turn, Moore, in town to promote his newest documentary about the nation’s health care system, showered praise on Newsom for promoting a universal health care plan in San Francisco and taking a stand on gay marriage.
“I want to say how proud I am to sit next to you here,” Moore said to Newsom at a news conference.
Later Wednesday, Moore and Newsom held a private screening of Moore’s new film followed by a question and answer session.
Many people are saying that this is his best movie yet. You’ll have to decide for yourself. The movie is in theaters June 29.

Moore is great, but Gavin is lucky he didn’t look to hard at his policies, or ride in his car.
I hope he talked to the few Supervisors who are the leaders in the greening of SF. Gavin drives an SUV. How greenish is that?
I’m still waiting for Gavin to take a position on Donald Fisher’s “neighborhood parking” measure that he’s trying to put on the November Ballot. Nothing out there will do more to increase the amount of cars and traffic congestion in the city.
And what about Gavin fighting for an INCREASE in the minimum downtown parking/housing ratio?
Do we want to be more like Paris, or more like Fremont?

It’s too bad this film of Moore’s didn’t come out before “Bowling for Columbine” or “Fahrenheit 9/11″.
If this was Moore’s first film it could be taken at face value, unfortunately Moore has discredited himself so badly with his previous work that all he’s doing is preaching to the choir this time. It’s too bad because this issue really deserved better. Maybe some day a filmmaker of real talent can make a documentary about the healthcare industry that doesn’t have a not too hidden agenda.

What does Michael Moore have to do with Newsom’s “gay Marriage” publicity stunt?
